In loving memory of Harold Oban, who passed away peacefully at the age of 102, surrounded by his family. Harold's remarkable life began on September 12, 1924, in Loyalton, South Dakota, born to Chester and Jeanette Oban. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, whose life was a testament to love, dedication, and community service.
Harold married the love of his life, Helen Marie Howe, in 1947. Together, they built a beautiful family and shared many cherished years until Helen's passing. Harold is survived by his devoted children, Jean Mead, Jim Oban, Terry Oban, Carol Oban, Sharon Oban, and Bruce Oban, along with 12 grandchildren, including Michael Knerr, Tyler Oban, Alex Oban, and Jared Oban, and 13 great-grandchildren. Harold was predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen Marie Oban.
A man of great intellect and ambition, Harold graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City in 1951, marking the beginning of a promising career. Prior to his academic achievements, Harold served his country with distinction in the U.S. Army in 1945, where he was part of a mechanized division in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
Harold dedicated his professional life to International Harvester, where he worked tirelessly until his well-earned retirement. His commitment to his work was only matched by his devotion to his community. Harold was instrumental in the incorporation of the area into what is now the city of Darien, Illinois, showcasing his passion for civic engagement and community development.
In his leisure time, Harold found joy in the tranquility of fishing and the camaraderie of golf. These hobbies were a reflection of his gentle spirit and his appreciation for life's simple pleasures. Above all, Harold cherished his family, and his love for his grandchildren was boundless. He was a constant source of wisdom and warmth, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of all who knew him.
A service to honor Harold's extraordinary life will be held on October 4, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Modell Funeral Home, located at 7710 South Cass Avenue, Darien, IL 60561. Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate the life of a man who lived with integrity, kindness, and a profound love for his family and community.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charity of your choice, in Harold's memory. His legacy of generosity and love will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
