Obituary We gather to celebrate the remarkable life of Gwendolyn Vanzant, who passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, at the age of 91. Born in Bath, North Carolina, on October 13, 1934, Gwendolyn was a beacon of love, laughter, and wisdom to all who had the privilege to know her. Gwendolyn was the cherished daughter of Joseph Paul and Lucy Keene and was predeceased by her beloved parents, along with her sisters Lavone, Josie, Ernestine, and Donnie, and brothers Archie, Ray Sr., JW, Hal, and Mack. Her nephews Dal and Ray Jr. also preceded her in death. She is lovingly remembered by her nieces Gracie, Faye, Susan, Linda, and Betty; nephews Blake and Timothy; and her dear cousin Polly. A brilliant mind, Gwendolyn excelled academically, graduating as valedictorian from Bath High School. She earned a full scholarship to East Carolina University, where she completed her bachelor's degree in Business. Her professional journey was as diverse as it was impressive. She was the proud owner of Club 24 and Coin Laundry. Her passion for education led her to teach accounting, business law, and computers at 71st High School. Further expanding her professional repertoire, she was also a licensed real estate broker. Gwendolyn was a vibrant member of the Mad Hatters Club and an active participant in the Republican party. Her life was filled with adventure and generosity. She found joy in taking long rides, baking cakes for those in need, bird watching, and volunteering with hospice. Her home was her sanctuary, a place where she delighted in walking and spending time. Married to the love of her life, Charles VanZant, Gwendolyn's marriage was a testament to romance and devotion. Together, they embraced life’s adventures, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion. She was known for her humor, intelligence, and caring nature, touching countless lives with her warmth and generosity. Her family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Harmony at Hope Mills and Haymount Skilled Nursing, Hospice, and her friend Abe for their attentive care and kindness. Gwendolyn is laid to rest at the Lafayette Menorial Park, Fayettevile, NC next to her husband Charles. There was not a viewing or funeral services. Only a quiet burial within 3 days of death. In remembrance of Gwendolyn, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice in her honor.
