Gwendolyn Robinson
September 3, 1943 — May 17, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Gwendolyn Robinson on May 17, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on September 3, 1943, in Los Angeles, California, Gwendolyn was the cherished daughter of Lillie and Eddie Matthews, and the beloved sister of the late Lawrence "Larry" Scott. Her journey on this earth was one marked by love, laughter, and an unparalleled zest for life.
Gwendolyn's roots in Los Angeles ran deep, beginning with her education at Jefferson High School, from which she graduated in 1961. Her thirst for knowledge led her to Los Angeles City College, where she earned an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts in 1963. This academic foundation paved the way for a successful career, starting as a computer operator for the City of Los Angeles. She later contributed her talents to the Automobile Club (AAA) and Bank of America before dedicating three decades of service to the State of California, retiring in 2008.
In 1965, Gwendolyn married the love of her life, Leonard T. Robinson. Together, they built a life filled with shared dreams and mutual respect. Their enduring love story was blessed with their daughter, Michelle (Robinson) Reynolds, who, along with her husband Michael Reynolds, brought five wonderful grandsons into Gwendolyn's life: Arthur "Jamie," Sean, Matthew, Brandon, and Cameron. Her family was her pride and joy, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
A woman of remarkable energy and compassion, Gwendolyn was an active member of the Mac Dance Studio in Los Angeles, where she found joy in teaching ballroom dancing, salsa, and line dancing. Her passion for dance was infectious, and she inspired countless students to find their rhythm and confidence on the dance floor. Her involvement in the dance community was one of her greatest joys, and her students' performances filled her with immense pride.
Gwendolyn's commitment to her community extended beyond dance. As a member of the West Angeles Church, she lent her voice to the Women's Day Choir every Mother's Day, and her heart to the sorority Sigma Gamma Rho, where she engaged in numerous charitable activities, including distributing food to those in need. Her organizational skills shone brightly in her work with the Jefferson High School fundraising committee, where she orchestrated events with grace and style.
Among her most cherished accomplishments was the creation of the Birthday Club, a testament to her enduring friendships with Tecumaeh "Tee" Coleman, Aubrey Trass, Elnore Johnson, Eurlene Mills, Veronica, and Barbara. These friendships spanned nearly 70 years and were celebrated with joy and gratitude.
Gwendolyn's ability to dance to any genre of music was emblematic of her approach to life: vibrant, inclusive, and ever-moving. She brought light and laughter wherever she went, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her.
The Robinson family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Santa Fe Homecare, Dr. Chynethia Boyd, and Tee Coleman for their compassionate care during Gwendolyn's final days. Special thanks are also extended to the Jekins Sisters and the Kool Babies for their unwavering support and love.
A celebration of Gwendolyn's extraordinary life will be held on June 17, 2026, at 2:30 PM at 1927 West 84th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90047. Family and friends are invited to join in honoring her memory and the legacy of joy and love she leaves behind.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice, in remembrance of Gwendolyn's generous spirit and dedication to helping others.
Gwendolyn Robinson now dances among the stars, forever in our hearts and memories, her spirit as vibrant and enduring as the music she loved.
