Gwendolyn Giles (Gwen) Johnson
May 4, 1941 — June 4, 2026
With hearts heavy yet grateful for the legacy she leaves behind, we announce the peaceful passing of Gwendolyn Giles Johnson, fondly known as Gwen, who went home to be with the Lord on June 4, 2026, at the age of 85.
Born on May 4, 1941, in the close-knit community of Whitmire, South Carolina, Gwen was one of six cherished children of Steven Sylvester Giles and Doris Hardeman Giles. Her childhood was filled with laughter and love, surrounded by her siblings and the values instilled by her parents, which she carried throughout her life.
Gwen’s life was a testament to faith, love, and dedication. As a devoted wife to her beloved husband, William Cleve (Jim) Johnson Jr., whom she shared 42 wonderful years of marriage, Gwen embodied the true essence of partnership and love. Together, they nurtured a family rooted in strong Christian values. Though preceded in death by Jim, their son, W. Cleve Johnson III, her brother Steven E. Giles, and sister Iris Giles Apperson, Gwen's spirit continues through her surviving family members.
Her legacy lives on through her son, Steve Johnson and his wife Rhonda; her granddaughter, Elizabeth Sturgis and husband Jeff; and her treasured great-grandchildren, Holden and Cora. Gwen also leaves behind her siblings, Larry Giles and wife Pat, David Giles and wife Clara, and Marcia Lane and husband Kelly, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.
Gwen was a devoted member of the Fort Mill Church of God, where her faith shone brightly. Her life was guided by the scripture, "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die" (John 11:25-26). Her deep faith and commitment to her church family were evident in her every action, providing a steadfast example of Christian love and service.
A woman of grace and kindness, Gwen’s warmth touched everyone she met. Her humility, compassion, and unwavering faith were the hallmarks of her character, endearing her to countless friends and family members who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.
A service to celebrate Gwen’s life will be held on June 9, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, located at 2133 Ebenezer Rd, Rock Hill, SC 29732. Friends and family are invited to gather for visitation prior to the service from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Interment will follow at Laurelwood Cemetery, 143 Laurel St, Rock Hill, SC 29730.
While Gwen’s physical presence will be deeply missed, we find solace in knowing she is reunited with her loved ones and resting in eternal peace. Her family extends heartfelt gratitude for the love and support shown during this time and invites all who knew Gwen to join in honoring her remarkable life.
