Gwendoline Smithers
March 23, 1883 — January 12, 1925
In loving memory of Gwendoline Smithers, a cherished member of our community, who peacefully departed this world on January 12, 1925, at the age of 41. Born on March 23, 1883, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Gwendoline lived a life that was as vibrant and colorful as the art she so dearly loved.
Gwendoline was the beloved daughter of the late Andrew and Maria Smithers, with whom she is now joyfully reunited. She was a devoted sister to Glenda Ackland, who survives her and will continue to cherish the many beautiful memories they shared.
A proud alumna of Williamsport University, Gwendoline graduated in 1901 with a degree in fine arts. Her passion for art was not just a profession, but a calling. As an art historian at the Williamsport Museum of the Arts, she dedicated her career to preserving and celebrating the history and beauty of artistic expression. Her colleagues remember her as a beacon of knowledge and enthusiasm, always willing to share her insights and inspire others.
Gwendoline was a woman of deep faith and commitment. An active member of her local Baptist church, she often found solace and joy in playing the organ during services. Her music brought comfort and joy to many, and her presence will be dearly missed by the congregation.
In her leisure time, Gwendoline was an avid fisher, finding peace and tranquility on the lake, casting her line from a boat and savoring the simple pleasures of nature. Her love for fishing mirrored her approach to life—patient, reflective, and full of appreciation for the world around her.
Known for her sweet and lovable nature, Gwendoline was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Her countless charitable endeavors touched many lives, and her legacy of kindness and generosity will continue to inspire those who knew her.
A service to honor and celebrate Gwendoline's life will be held on January 15, 1925, at 17:15 at St. Augustine's Church, located at 125 Pine St., Williamsport, PA. All who knew and loved her are invited to join in remembrance of a life well-lived.
The Smithers family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Williamsport Hospital for the care and compassion they provided during Gwendoline's injury.
Though Gwendoline has left this world, her spirit remains with us in the art she cherished, the music she played, and the kindness she bestowed upon others. May we all find comfort in knowing that her legacy will live on in our hearts forever.
