In Loving Memory

Gregory Santonio Avila
July 28, 1974 — April 9, 2026
It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gregory Santonio Avila, a beloved son, brother, and father, who left this world on April 10, 2026, at the age of 51. Gregory's journey began on July 28, 1974, in the warm and vibrant community of Roswell, New Mexico, where he was born to Valentin and Lydia Avila.
Gregory's life was a tapestry of both light and shadow, woven with moments of struggle and resilience. Despite the challenges he faced, particularly with substance abuse, he possessed an enduring spirit that touched those around him. He fought valiantly against his personal battles, and even in times of great difficulty, he demonstrated a capacity for care and compassion that left an indelible mark on his family and friends.
Predeceased by his cherished sons, Greg Jr. and Lorenzo Avila, Gregory's heart bore the immeasurable weight of their loss. Yet, he continued to carry their memory forward, honoring them in his own way. He is survived by his devoted sister, Rosella Marie Avila, who stood by him with unwavering support and love. His former spouse, Ruby Meza, also remains a part of the family tapestry, a testament to the bonds that endure beyond separation.
Gregory's life, though marked by adversity, was also filled with moments of genuine connection and care. He often provided a helping hand to those in need, offering comfort and solace in times of hardship. His love for his family was expressed in myriad ways, from small gestures to significant acts of kindness, each one a reminder of his enduring presence in their lives.
In honoring Gregory's memory, we choose to celebrate the facets of his character that shone through the darkness. His legacy is one of resilience, love, and the enduring hope that springs from the human spirit. Though his journey was not without its trials, Gregory's presence in our lives was a gift that we will cherish forever.
A private funeral service will be held to honor Gregory's life, allowing his family and close friends to say their final goodbyes in an intimate setting. As we gather to remember him, we carry with us the lessons he taught us and the love he shared, ensuring that his spirit remains alive in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to organizations dedicated to helping those struggling with homelessness and substance abuse, in the hope that others may find the support and solace they need.
Gregory Santonio Avila will be deeply missed, but his memory will continue to inspire us to live with compassion and strength, just as he did. May he find peace and rest in the embrace of those he loved and lost, and may his soul find solace in the light that now guides him home.
