Gregory's sudden departure has left a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. He was a man of great compassion, unyielding dedication, and boundless curiosity, whose presence will be deeply missed yet forever cherished. Born to Robert and Arlene Horeni (née Rhem), Gregory was a beacon of light and kindness from the very beginning. He was predeceased by his beloved parents, and we find solace in the thought that they are reunited once more. Gregory is survived by his devoted wife, Janice Horeni, who was his partner in life and love, offering unwavering support and companionship throughout their many cherished years together. Gregory leaves behind a loving family, including his daughter Jo Ann Horeni, his son Steven Horeni and daughter-in-law Lauren Douglas, and his daughter Jennifer Horeni. Each of them carries a piece of Gregory's heart, his wisdom, and his sense of wonder into the future. He is also lovingly remembered by his sister, Roberta Gordon, and her husband Darrel, who shared countless family gatherings and memories that will be held dear forever. For 40 years, Gregory dedicated his professional life to serving others as a registered nurse at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Chicago. His compassionate care and tireless dedication to his patients and colleagues left a lasting impact, earning him a revered place in the hearts of all who had the privilege of working alongside him. Gregory's commitment to his vocation was a testament to his nurturing spirit and desire to make the world a better place, one patient at a time. Outside of his career, Gregory was a man of varied interests and deep passions. He was an avid reader, finding joy and solace in the pages of countless books. His love for the great outdoors led him on many hiking adventures, where he found peace and inspiration in nature's splendor. Gregory's curiosity and love for learning took him on travels far and wide, visiting historical landmarks, museums, and botanical gardens, each journey adding new chapters to the rich tapestry of his life. A service to honor and celebrate the life of Gregory J. Horeni will be held on May 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, located at 8404 S. Cass Ave., Darien, IL 60561. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Gregory are invited to join in remembering a truly remarkable man, whose legacy of love, kindness, and service will continue to inspire us all. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Gregory's memory, supporting causes that reflect his lifelong commitment to caring for others and nurturing the world around him.
