Grace Marlene Nelson

Grace Marlene Nelson, a beloved matriarch and cherished friend, peacefully passed away at her home in Centralia on May 19, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on November 13, 1934, in the small town of Winlock, Washington, Marlene, as she was affectionately known, was the daughter of Elmer and Grace (Hoikka) Koski. She was a beacon of warmth and compassion throughout her life, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Marlene's early years in Winlock were marked by a close-knit family and a love for learning. She graduated from Chehalis High School before pursuing her passion for helping others at the Tacoma General School of Nursing, from which she graduated in 1955. With her nursing degree in hand, Marlene embarked on a fulfilling career as a Registered Nurse, serving with dedication at St. Helen's Hospital, Peter Pan Nursing Homes, and the Centralia Convalescent Home until her retirement in the 1990s. Her kind and gentle nature made her a beloved figure among patients and colleagues alike. In 1975, Marlene married the love of her life, Bruce Nelson. Together, they built a life rich with love and laughter, sharing 40 wonderful years of marriage until Bruce's passing. Marlene was predeceased by her parents, her husband Bruce, her son Dennis Gunther, and her brothers Virgil, Charles, and Allyn Koski. Despite these profound losses, Marlene's resilience and faith were unwavering, embodying a spirit of grace and strength that inspired all who knew her. Marlene's life was a tapestry of love and devotion, woven together by her faith, family, and friendships. An active member of the Onalaska Assembly of God and Hope Church in Centralia, her faith was a guiding light throughout her life. Her kindness extended beyond her family, touching the lives of her neighbors and community members, who often found solace in her warm smile and generous spirit. A woman of many talents, Marlene was an avid crafter who relished knitting, crocheting, beading, and jewelry making. Her creations were more than just crafts; they were expressions of love, often shared with family and friends. An enthusiastic reader and singer, Marlene also brought joy through her voice and stories. Known for her competitive spirit, she was a fierce Pinochle player, always ready for a game with her loved ones. Marlene's legacy is carried forward by her sister Patricia Hunnum and her devoted children: Deborah Beachboard, Dina Boggs, Thomas Guenther, Jacob Guenther, and Darryl Guenther. Her memory will also live on through her numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and her many nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Her beloved dog, Gracie, was a constant companion, bringing joy and comfort to Marlene's days. In her life, Marlene exemplified the virtues of kindness, generosity, and devotion. A true inspiration, she supported numerous charitable causes, always eager to lend a helping hand to those in need. In her memory, her family encourages friends and loved ones to honor her legacy by making a donation to a charity close to their hearts, just as Marlene would have done.
