Grace departed this world as she desired, surrounded by her loving family, in the comforts of her home. Born on August 2, 1930, in vibrant Boston, Massachusetts, Grace's life was a testament to love, music, and unwavering generosity.
Grace was the cherished daughter of Anne E. Merrick and William K. Haley. She was predeceased by her parents, her beloved siblings Anne Richendollar, John Haley, James Haley, William Haley, her devoted husband, Robert G. French, and her dear son, Robert G. French, Jr. Despite these profound losses, Grace's spirit remained resilient and full of light.
In 1950, Grace married the love of her life, Robert George French, at the Acton Baptist Church. Together, they crafted a life steeped in love and harmony, raising four children in a home that resonated with the joyous sounds of bluegrass music. As true soulmates, Grace and Bob shared an unwavering passion for music, performing together in various country and bluegrass bands, delighting audiences at venues such as the Hillbilly Ranch in Boston and numerous music festivals across New England. Their legacy in the music community was cemented through their contributions to popularizing bluegrass music in America, earning Grace recognition and accolades.
Grace's educational journey took her to Readville High School in Readville, MA, from which she graduated in 1958. Her career was a tapestry of day jobs paired with evening and weekend musical performances. Her dedication to both her work and her art was admired by all who knew her.
Those privileged to know Grace will remember her as a woman quick to laugh, generously reaching out to anyone in need. Her kindness and warmth extended far beyond her immediate family, touching countless lives and leaving an indelible impact on her community.
Grace is lovingly remembered by her surviving children, daughters Jeanne French and Mary Bentham, and son John French. Her legacy is further carried on by her ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, who continue to celebrate the life and lessons imparted by their beloved matriarch.
In accordance with her wishes, a private ceremony will be held to honor Grace's life. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the compassionate team at Andro Hospice Care in Maine for the warmth and care they provided during Grace’s final days.
As we bid farewell to a remarkable soul, we celebrate Grace Marie French’s extraordinary life—a life filled with love, music, and an enduring spirit that will forever be cherished in the hearts of all who knew her.
