Gordon Lawrence Noble
June 17, 1936 — December 24, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gordon Lawrence Noble, a cherished member of the South Lincoln community, who left this world peacefully on December 24, 2025, at the age of 89. Gordon was born on June 17, 1936, in the charming town of Brandon, Vermont, to his loving parents Lester and Gladys Noble. He was a proud Vermonter whose life was a testament to hard work, dedication, and the beauty of a life well-lived.
Gordon was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Allen Noble, and his dear friend, Carol Steady. He is survived by his siblings, Donald Noble of Orlando, Florida, Edith Noble of Leominster, Massachusetts, and Robert Noble of Bristol, Vermont. Though he did not have a traditional family of his own, Gordon's heart was full of love for his devoted canine companions, Penny, Treva, and Buffy, and he cherished his role as caretaker for many other beloved animals, including Amos, Zoe, Indy, and Sasha. His dear friend, Wolf, also held a special place in his heart.
Gordon's early education at South Lincoln School and West Hill School in Lincoln, Vermont, followed by his graduation from Mt. Abraham Union High School in Bristol, laid the foundation for a life of service and skill. He answered the call of duty by serving in the Army in Germany as a machine gun crewman, where he bravely patrolled the frigid winters and carried out his responsibilities with distinction, earning an honorable discharge.
Returning to his roots, Gordon dedicated his life to working on the family farm in South Lincoln, where he tended cows, logged, sugared, and maintained the land with unwavering commitment. His professional journey took him to Cartmell Sales and Service in Middlebury, Vermont, which later became Green Mountain Tractor, and finally Champlain Valley Equipment. As a semi-truck driver, Gordon's expertise in hauling and delivering farm equipment throughout Vermont and the Northeast was highly valued, earning him a reputation for safety, skill, and problem-solving.
Gordon was not just a man of work but a steward of nature and a friend to the creatures that graced his land. He found joy in filling bird feeders at dawn and dusk, watching as local and migrating birds found refuge on his property. The foxes that denned in his equipment barn each year were a testament to the trust he inspired in all beings, both human and animal.
Known for his strong, clever, and opinionated nature, Gordon was a man of integrity and humor. His unwavering dedication to helping neighbors—whether plowing driveways, rescuing vehicles from ditches, or delivering firewood to those in need—was a hallmark of his character. He took pride in maintaining everything he owned and generously shared his skills and knowledge with others, teaching them to care for their own lands.
A celebration of Gordon's life will take place on May 10, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the Lincoln Library on River Road in Lincoln, Vermont. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Addison County Humane Society, a cause close to Gordon's heart.
Gordon Lawrence Noble's legacy of kindness, hard work, and love for the natural world will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. As we remember him, may we honor his memory by embracing the values he held dear and by making a positive difference in our own communities.
