Gladys Darlene Smith

November 10, 1929 — February 19, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gladys Darlene Smith, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Gladys left this world peacefully in the comforting embrace of her family and close friends on February 19, 2026, at her home. Her sudden departure in the night has left a void that will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Gladys was born on November 10, 1929, in the quaint town of Lamont, Alberta, to parents Henry and Wilma Ross (nee McMaster). She was a beacon of warmth and strength throughout her life, embodying qualities of resilience and unwavering love that she passed onto her family. Predeceased by her beloved parents, sister Joan, brother Arthur, and son Michael, Gladys is now reunited with them in eternal peace. On November 11, 1949, Gladys married Robert Smith at St. Stephens Roman Catholic Church in Olds, Alberta, marking the beginning of a beautiful journey shared over decades. Together, they built a life full of love and laughter, raising three wonderful children: Andrew, Jacob, and Laura. Gladys took immense pride in her family, and her legacy continues through her surviving husband Robert; her sons Andrew and Jacob (with spouse Erin); and her daughter Laura (with spouse Liam). She was the adored grandmother to Alex, Alexis, and Fiona, and found great joy in watching them grow. Gladys graduated from Olds High School in 1947 and furthered her education at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in 1950. Her passion for cooking led her to a remarkable career in the hospitality industry, where she dedicated 44 years of her life working as a line chef and eventually rising to the position of head chef in professional kitchens across Alberta. Gladys was renowned for her culinary skills, particularly her innovative take on savory crepes and her love for preparing exotic dishes from around the world. When not in the kitchen, Gladys could be found in her crochet room, crafting beautiful clothing for her children and grandchildren. Her creations were not just garments but tokens of her love and care, each stitch imbued with her devotion to family. Gladys was known for her "can do" attitude and determination, qualities that inspired everyone around her. She was always ready to lend a helping hand, catering family events with joy and without expectation, ensuring her family always came first. Her selfless nature and commitment to her loved ones were the hallmarks of her life. In honor of her memory and her generous spirit, donations can be made to the Olds Food Bank, an organization close to her heart. As we say goodbye to Gladys, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of love, laughter, and unforgettable moments. Her legacy will continue to inspire those she leaves behind. Rest in peace, beloved Gladys, in the eternal embrace of those who went before you. You will be dearly missed and forever cherished.
