Gerald John McKinney
March 24, 1939 — June 19, 2026
Gerald John McKinney, affectionately known as Jerry, peacefully passed away on June 19, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on March 24, 1939, in the close-knit community of Shelbyville, Indiana, Jerry was the cherished son of Morris William McKinney and Helen Barbara (Carter) McKinney. His early years were marked by the love and camaraderie of family, alongside his sister, Barbara, and the memory of a stillborn sister who preceded him in death.
Jerry's formative years were spent in the halls of Hope High School, from which he graduated in 1957. As a proud member of the FFA chapter and an enthusiastic participant in all sports, Jerry's youthful vigor was evident. His dedication to the 4-H club for a decade spoke volumes of his commitment to agriculture and community service. Jerry went on to attend Purdue University, furthering his education and passion for farming.
In 1961, Jerry answered the call of duty and served his country with honor in the United States Army. His service took him to Korea and back home, where he laid the foundation for a life marked by integrity and dedication.
Upon returning to Indiana, Jerry embraced the role of custodian of the family farm, a vocation that he pursued with unwavering passion. His love for the land was matched only by his love for his family and community. Jerry also dedicated many years to driving a school bus, ensuring that the children of his community traveled safely each day.
Jerry's life was a tapestry woven with love, faith, and service. As a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Hope, he served in various capacities, always finding joy in giving back to the congregation that was his spiritual home. His commitment to educating the young minds of his community was evident in his "farming in the classroom" initiatives, where he brought the wonders of agriculture to schools, often accompanied by a calf or piglet to delight the students.
Family was Jerry's greatest treasure. He was married to Judith Deiwert McKinney on June 7, 1964, and although their paths diverged, they shared a bond that remained throughout their lives. On March 21, 2000, Jerry found love once more and married Janet Frazier McKinney, who survives him. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, love, and shared adventures.
Jerry is survived by his beloved wife, Janet; his children, Chris (Jackie) McKinney, Steve (Rebecca) McKinney, and Cathy (Matt) Robertson; and his sister, Barbara (Bill) Carr. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Austin (Kelly) McKinney, Dalton McKinney, Shelbi (Korey) Wendel, Beau (Molly) McKinney, Squire (Ariel) McKinney, and Ruby McKinney, as well as his 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, including Kelsi Jo Wendel, Cash McKinney, and Melanie McKinney. He was predeceased by his parents and his ex-wife, Judith Kay McKinney.
Jerry's life was rich with experiences and hobbies that brought him joy. He was an avid sports enthusiast, a lover of camping, horseback riding, swimming, and traveling. His presence was a fixture at local high school games, where he cheered on not only his grandchildren and great-grandchildren but all of the young athletes who reminded him of his own youthful days.
In remembering Jerry, we celebrate a life well-lived—one filled with boundless love, faith, and an unwavering commitment to his family, friends, and community. His spirit will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him and those who will hear of his legacy for generations to come.
