Gerald F. Peterson

Gerald F. Peterson, affectionately known as Jerry, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2026, at Hillcrest Shadow Lake, Papillion, NE, leaving behind a legacy of devotion, humor, and kindness. Born on August 31, 1929, in Dunlap, Iowa, Jerry was the cherished son of Fred and Myrle Peterson. He was predeceased by his loving parents and his younger brother, Roger Peterson. Jerry's early years were marked by his exceptional dedication to education and service. After graduating from Dunlap Catholic High School, he pursued a degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, setting the stage for a successful career as an accountant. His patriotic spirit led him to serve in the United States Army, where he demonstrated courage and resilience during the Korean War with the 185th Engineer Combat Battalion. In 1952, Jerry married the love of his life, Melania Schwery, with whom he shared an extraordinary 74-year journey. Together, they nurtured a family that brought them immense joy and fulfillment. Jerry is survived by his beloved wife Melania, his devoted daughter Rogene and her husband Dennis Bunjer, and his treasured grandchildren: Mike (Candi), Bob (Jackie), Dan, and Kristi (Brad) Cameron. He was also a proud great-grandfather to 15 great-grandchildren, each of whom he adored deeply. Jerry's professional life was marked by integrity and dedication. His career spanned over three decades at the Packaging Corporation of America in Omaha, where he excelled as an accountant. After retiring, Jerry embraced a new opportunity working with Sam Walton of Walmart in Arkansas, where he took pride in signing up new members and enjoyed the company of Mr. Walton himself during lunch breaks. Jerry was a man of faith and community, actively participating as a member of St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. His vibrant spirit extended beyond his professional and community endeavors. He was an accomplished accordion player, captivating audiences since his youth and even performing with Tex Rogers and His Cowboys on the Johnny Carson Radio Talk Show in 1950. Jerry and Melania shared a passion for travel and ballroom dancing, creating cherished memories on their many cruises and making lifelong friends along the way. Known for his infectious smile and great sense of humor, Jerry's presence lit up every room he entered. His warmth and generosity touched the lives of all who knew him, leaving an indelible mark on both family and friends. A service to celebrate Jerry's remarkable life will be held on August 7, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church, located at 16701 S Street, Omaha, NE. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Jerry's memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, an organization close to his heart. Jerry's life was a testament to love, dedication, and resilience. As we say goodbye to this extraordinary man, we cherish the memories and the legacy he leaves behind. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
