Gerald "Bill" Murphy, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2026, after bravely facing a battle with cancer. Born on October 17, 1942, in Mansfield, Ohio, Bill was the cherished son of Gerald and Ruth (Smith) Murphy. He was predeceased by his devoted parents and his loving wife, Phyllis Williams Murphy, who passed in 2017.
Bill's life was marked by love, service, and a passion for people. He spent his early years in Springfield, Ohio, where he graduated from high school before proudly enlisting in the United States Air Force. His service took him to Chandler Air Force Base in Minnesota, where he met and married Sandy (Miller). Together, they were blessed with three daughters, Kim Murphy, Connie (Greg) Vande Velde of Luverne, and Kathy (Bob) Condon of Clara City, MN.
Bill's career as a salesman was a testament to his genuine love for people and his exceptional ability to connect with them. His professional journey began at Creeger's Clothing in Luverne and extended into the agricultural sector. Later, in Florida, he applied his talents to selling pavers, designing patios for luxurious homes.
Family was at the heart of Bill's world. He is survived by his sister, Diena (Gary) Evilsizor of Urbana, Ohio, Special friend Ida Trainum. his daughters, six grandchildren—Emily (Jon) Acevedo Hardwick, Mark Spreiter of Luverne, Allyson (Nick) Van Belle of Luverne, Taylor Vande Velde of Worthington, Matt (Stephanie) Condon, and Shaun (Hailey) Condon of Clara City—and thirteen great-grandchildren. Special nieces Annette (Keith) Stewart and her family and Andrea Masters and her family. Special cousin Ruthann Arris Each of them carries forward his legacy of kindness and warmth.
A man of many interests, Bill was an avid golfer, often found on the greens of any nearby course, always embracing the competitive spirit. His love for music, especially from the fifties and sixties, was evident in his joyful dancing. Bill and Phyllis shared a love for "shag" dancing, a passion he continued with his dear friend Ida after Phyllis's passing.
In Minnesota, Bill was an active member of the Optimist Club, reflecting his commitment to community service. His infectious personality and love for conversation made him a cherished friend and the ultimate salesman.
Bill is remembered for his unwavering positivity, his ability to make everyone feel valued, and his relentless zest for life. His family and friends find comfort in the countless memories he created and shared with them.
