It is with profound sadness, yet a heart full of cherished memories, that we announce the peaceful passing of George Hardy Edwards Sr. on March 23, 2026, at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, Alabama. Born on October 23, 1942, in Jacksonville, Florida, George lived a life rich in love, service, and adventure. He was the beloved son of the late James Hardy and Georgia Mae Edwards, and the cherished brother of the late David Terrell Edwards. George was a man of many passions and talents, who served his country with honor in the US Navy from 1964 to 1966. It was during his naval service that he discovered a love for photography—a passion that would guide his career for many years. After his service, George applied his skills at the Mobile Register as a photographer before continuing his career with the US Army Corps of Engineers, from which he retired in August 1997. On September 18, 2018, in Spanish Fort, Alabama, George married the love of his life, Detriss “Dee” Lavender, who survives him. Their years together were filled with laughter, joy, and shared experiences. George's legacy continues through his children: his son, George H. Edwards Jr., and daughters, Kimberly A. Partridge and Jessica A. Reid, who will forever hold his memory in their hearts. He was predeceased by his son, Jame Dean Edwards, whom he always remembered with love. George was a devoted grandfather to his seven grandchildren and his four great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy. His family was his world, and he relished every moment spent in their company. Whether it was through stories or life lessons, his influence will remain a guiding light in their lives. A man of diverse interests, George found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved fishing, water skiing, and target shooting, and he had a fondness for traveling and caring for his dogs. He was also an active participant in various Mardi Gras organizations over the years, embracing the vibrant culture and community spirit. George was known for his kindness, humor, and unwavering integrity. He had an innate ability to make those around him feel valued and loved. His warmth and generosity left a lasting impact on everyone he met, creating bonds that transcended time. A service to celebrate George's life will be held on April 10, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the Alabama State Veterans Cemetery in Spanish Fort, located at 34904 State Highway 225, Spanish Fort, AL 36527. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Baldwin County Humane Society, a cause dear to George's heart. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Community Hospice, Thomas Hospital, and Cason Funeral Services for their exceptional care and support during this difficult time. They also offer heartfelt thanks to all who have reached out with kindness, prayers, and support. Your presence and love have been a source of comfort and strength. As we say goodbye to George, let us find solace in the words of "Footprints in the Sand," a poem that meant so much to him, reminding us that we are never truly alone. George Hardy Edwards Sr. will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. Thank you for your kindness, prayers, and support during this difficult time.
