With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of George Hardy Edwards Sr, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. George departed this world on March 23, 2026, at the age of 83, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. He passed peacefully at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, Alabama, surrounded by the love of his family.
George was born on October 23, 1942, in Jacksonville, Florida, to his loving parents, James Hardy and Georgia Mae Edwards. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother David Terrell Edwards, and his son, Jame Dean Edwards. George's life was a testament to resilience and warmth, always welcoming everyone with a kind smile and a generous heart.
In 1964, George answered the call of duty and served his country with honor in the United States Navy, dedicating two years of his life to the service. During his time in the Navy, George discovered his passion for photography, which would become his lifelong career. After his honorable discharge, he pursued this passion, first at the Mobile Register as a photographer and eventually retiring from the US Army Corps of Engineers in August 1997. His keen eye and artistic spirit captured moments that told stories beyond words.
George had a zest for life that was evident in his love for fishing, water skiing, and target shooting. He found joy in traveling and was an ardent caretaker of his beloved dogs. Above all, he cherished the time he spent with his family and friends, creating bonds that would withstand the test of time. His involvement in various Mardi Gras organizations spoke to his love for community and celebration.
George's journey was enriched by his marriage to Detriss “Dee” Lavender on September 18, 2018, in Spanish Fort, Alabama. Together, they built a life filled with love and shared dreams. He is survived by his devoted wife, Detriss; his daughters, Kimberly A Partridge and Jessica A Reid; and his son, George H Edwards Jr. He also leaves behind the joy of seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his legacy of kindness and strength.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to Community Hospice, Thomas Hospital, and Cason Funeral Services for their unwavering support during this difficult time. A service to honor and celebrate George's life will be held on April 10, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the Alabama State Veterans Cemetery, located at 34904 State Highway 225, Spanish Fort, AL 36527. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Baldwin County Humane Society, reflecting George's love for animals.
A poem that held deep meaning for George, "Footprints in the Sand," reminds us of the comforting presence of the Lord during life's trials. As we reflect on the life of George Hardy Edwards Sr, we take solace in knowing that he is now carried in the gentle embrace of the Lord.
The family wishes to convey their heartfelt thanks to all who have offered their kindness, prayers, and support. Your presence and love have been a source of great comfort during this time. Thank you for remembering George with us, a man whose footprints have left an indelible mark on our hearts.
