It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of George Hardy Edwards Sr. on March 23, 2026, at the age of 83. George passed away peacefully at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, Alabama, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on October 23, 1942, in Jacksonville, Florida, George was the cherished son of the late James Hardy and Georgia Mae Edwards. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, his brother David Terrell Edwards, and his son Jame Dean Edwards. Despite these painful losses, George's life was a testament to resilience, love, and dedication. George proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1964 to 1966, where he discovered his passion for photography—a vocation that would shape his professional journey. After his service, George embarked on a successful career, sharing his artistic eye with the Mobile Register as a photographer. He later retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in August 1997, leaving behind a legacy of creativity and excellence. In 2018, George found love anew with his devoted wife, Detriss "Dee" Lavender, whom he married on September 18 in Spanish Fort, Alabama. Together, they created a life filled with joy, adventure, and companionship. George is also survived by his loving children: daughters Kimberly A. Partridge and Jessica A. Reid, and son George H. Edwards Jr., each of whom carries forward his spirit in their hearts. A man of many interests, George found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid fisherman, a skilled water skier, and a precise target shooter. He cherished traveling, cared deeply for his dogs, and relished the company of friends and family. George was also known for his active involvement in various Mardi Gras organizations, where his vibrant spirit and sense of community shone brightly. George's life will be celebrated at a service on April 10, 2026, at 2:00 PM, at the Alabama State Veterans Cemetery in Spanish Fort, located at 34904 State Highway 225. The family invites all who knew and loved George to join them in honoring his remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Baldwin County Humane Society, a cause close to George's heart, reflecting his deep love for animals. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Community Hospice, Thomas Hospital, and Cason Funeral Services for their compassionate care and support during this difficult time. George Hardy Edwards Sr. lived a life full of passion, service, and love. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him. May he rest in peace, knowing his life was a beacon of light to all who crossed his path.
