George H. Kershner

September 16, 1944 — March 24, 2026

George H. Kershner, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and devoted friend, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on September 16, 1944, in the serene town of West Lawn, Pennsylvania, George was the cherished son of E. Laura (Keim) Kershner and E. Henry Kershner. His life was a radiant testament to the power of compassion, dedication, and an unyielding zest for life. George's journey began in the classrooms of Wilson High School, where he graduated in 1962. He continued his academic pursuits at Albright College, graduating in 1966, before following his calling to Thomas Jefferson Medical School, where he graduated in 1970. Inspired by a profound sense of duty, George served as a Naval officer and doctor during the Vietnam War, where his courage and commitment to healing knew no bounds. Upon returning to Pennsylvania, George embarked on a lifelong career in medicine. He began his residency at Reading Hospital and soon moved to the Emergency Room, where his expertise and compassion for others truly shone. As Director of the ER from 1980 to 1995, George was a cornerstone of comfort and care, offering solace in the most critical moments. He continued to serve tirelessly until his retirement in 2012, touching countless lives with his skill and empathy. George's life was a tapestry woven with passions that extended beyond his professional achievements. A lover of the arts, he served on the Board of Directors for the Reading Symphony Orchestra, sharing his love for classical music with the community. His own musical talent was remarkable; as a classical pianist, George played over 100 recitals and numerous larger concerts, always challenging himself with the most intricate pieces. Sailing was another of George's great loves. He guided family and friends on unforgettable adventures through the Chesapeake Bay, around New England, and in the Caribbean, where the sea was a canvas for his free spirit. A passionate baseball enthusiast, George also dedicated time as head coach for his sons' little league teams and umpired across the league, instilling the values of teamwork and sportsmanship in young players. Those who knew George remembered him for his quick wit, infectious laughter, and impressive intellect. He had an uncanny ability to recall the smallest details, always ready with a story or a joke. His warmth and generosity knew no boundaries, as he offered help to family, friends, and strangers alike. George is survived by his devoted wife, Susie Kershner, who stood by his side throughout the years, filling their life with love and laughter. He is lovingly remembered by his sister, Susan Reeser, and his sons, David of Westport, CT, Michael of London, UK, and Geoff of Los Gatos, CA. His legacy lives on in his ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his spirit of kindness and curiosity. As we bid farewell to George, we celebrate a life lived with passion, purpose, and unending love. His memory will forever be a guiding light for those fortunate enough to have known him. In honoring his life, we find comfort in knowing that his legacy of compassion and dedication will continue to inspire future generations. George H. Kershner, a life well-lived, will be profoundly missed but never forgotten.
