April 1, 1939 – May 1, 2026
In the quiet embrace of a gentle May morning, George Glispie Jr., a man of profound faith and unwavering love, peacefully departed this world to rest in the arms of the Lord after months of countless victories. Born on April 1, 1939, in Prairie Point, Mississippi, George’s journey began under the loving guidance of his parents, George and Mary Gillespie. Though they preceded him in death, along with his beloved daughter Sheila, and siblings Arthur, Grover, Clinton, Leonard, Loucius, Bishop William Glispie, Bertha Bland, Annie Willie, Louis Clark, and Pearlie Mea, their spirits now joyfully reunite in heavenly peace.
George leaves behind his cherished wife of 65 years, Aretha, and a family whose lives remain richly blessed by his presence. Their union, formed in 1961 in Chicago, Illinois, stands as a testament to enduring love and commitment fortified by God. Together, they nurtured a beautiful family of daughters, Diane (Robert), Ramona, Sonia (Tyrone), Aretha (James), and sons Sergeant First Class (Retired) Orlando Gillespie (Deidre), George (Yolanda), Leshun, Theodis (Meagan), and Anthony (Dr. Charlotte Glispie). His legacy extends to his 26 grandchildren, Shakieria, Martel, Gericka, Gemijah, Jwan, Jamira, Jaiven, Xavier, Chloe, Yasmin, Shanice, Maya, Skye, Kyla, Ramon, Cameron, Tyler, Armani, Anaya, Brylan, Bria, Olivia, Sahana, Alayna, Bryce, and Emmanuel, and 7 great-grandchildren, Rayah, Z'Rai, Kahari, Kion, Nalani, Paxon, and Princeton. His brothers, Julius, James A, and Edward Gillespie, his sister, Verlie D Sherrod, and a host of nieces, nephews, and church members also survive him, each a testament to the breadth of his love and influence.
George’s educational journey led him from M&I High School in Macon, Mississippi, to trade school at AT&T Illinois Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, culminating in a dedicated career as an Electrical Lineman for Ameritech. Over three decades, he earned the affectionate nickname "Preacher" among his colleagues, always eager to share God’s word and offer guidance.
Faith was the cornerstone of George’s life. He accepted Christ at an early age at Christ Miracle Center under the late Pastor Frances Thomas, beginning a lifelong dedication to ministry. Ordained as a Minister, he served as Treasurer and Superintendent, roles he fulfilled with humility and integrity. His spiritual journey continued under Bishop Ralph Terry, culminating in co-founding the Old Landmark Church of Holiness with his brother, Bishop William Glispie. Together, they built a ministry of compassion, outreach, and service, providing food, prayer, and hope to those in need.
Beyond his service, George found joy in simple pleasures like watching baseball and fishing. Though a man of few words, his quiet strength, steadfast faith, and boundless generosity spoke volumes. Known for his impeccable dress, his true adornment was a heart full of kindness, always ready to help others without hesitation.
A celebration of George’s life will be held on May 23, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Holy Temple Cathedral, located at 15912 Lincoln Ave., Harvey, IL. The family expresses their profound gratitude to the healthcare providers who cared for George with compassion and to Ella Essence of Evanston, IL, for the beautiful floral arrangements. Special thanks to Carter’s Funeral Home for their professional and compassionate service, and to Pastor James A. Gillespie, whose unwavering spiritual support was a beacon of strength for the family.
George Glispie Jr.’s legacy will forever endure through the lives he touched, the family he loved, and the example he set as a true servant of Christ. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather, and a faithful friend. His departure leaves a void, but his spirit, marked by love and faith, will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
