George Dennis Copen

September 24, 1939 — September 25, 2026

George Dennis Copen, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on September 24, 1939, in Portsmouth, Ohio, George lived a life marked by love, knowledge, and unwavering faith. George was raised by his loving parents, Floyd and Alice Copen, who instilled in him the values of kindness and curiosity. He was predeceased by his cherished wife, Amelia "Pinkie" Parker Copen, his parents, and his granddaughter, Grace Spears. George and Pinkie's love story began in high school, leading to a devoted marriage on December 28, 1958, that lasted until Pinkie's passing in 2015. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership. A proud alumnus of Clay High School's class of 1957, George furthered his education at the University of Cincinnati, earning a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering. His professional journey as a chemical engineer began at IBM in Fishkill, NY, from 1966 to 1975, and continued at the Uranium Enrichment Plant in Piketon, Ohio, until his retirement. George was a respected member of The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), where he was known for his dedication and expertise. George's life was enriched by his deep involvement with Temple Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, Teacher, and youth leader. His passion for history and Bible archeology, coupled with his love for teaching, left a lasting impact on the many lives he touched. George's generosity and quiet acts of kindness, alongside Pinkie's, helped countless individuals, reflecting his compassionate spirit. He was a lifelong learner with a voracious appetite for literature, particularly History and Science Fiction/Fantasy. George found joy in nature, whether tending to his garden, playing sports, or simply listening to the rain on a tin roof. His favorite retreats included the serene beaches and the majestic mountains of Tennessee. George leaves behind a legacy of love and wisdom, survived by his children: Kimberly Copen-Spears (Randy) of Columbus, OH, Bradly Copen of Columbus, OH, and Blair Copen (Joy) of Lucasville, OH; his six grandchildren; and his younger sister, "Princess" Susie Horr, of Waverly, OH. His family, though grieving, takes comfort in the memories they shared and the lessons learned from his remarkable life. In honor of George's memory, the family suggests donations be made to Temple Baptist Church's Missionary Fund, reflecting his generosity and commitment to spreading the gospel. George Dennis Copen will be remembered as a man of deep faith, endless curiosity, and profound love for his family. A celebration of George's life will be held at Temple Baptist Church 1148 Gallia Street on Saturday October 3rd at 12 p.m. The family invites all who knew him to attend and share their favorite memories.
