January 12, 1938 — August 31, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George Dempsey Smith, a cherished son, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and beloved friend, who left us peacefully on August 31, 2026, at the Forestville Rehabilitation Center. Born on January 12, 1938, in Scotland Neck, North Carolina, George was a beacon of warmth, humor, and kindness to all who had the privilege of knowing him. George was the loving son of Isiah and Bettie Smith, who predeceased him in death, along with his brother William and his son Darius. He is survived by his devoted sister, Thelma Mosley, his sons, Orlando Tillery and the late Darius Brady. His legacy also lives on through his treasured grandchildren, Mesha Janae, Charisma, and Jamere, and his great-grandchildren, Jalen and Aubrie. George's family extended beyond these immediate connections, including nieces Michelle and Janice, nephews Fred Jr. and William Jr., and a host of great-nieces and nephews: Keisha, Fred III, Joel, Benjamin, Ebony, D'Angelo, and Brianna. He also held a special bond with the Brady family—Edna, Violent, Pres, and Paul—as well as Demetrious Royster, Eric DuBois, and numerous cousins. George's life was marked by a profound commitment to his country and his community. After graduating from Brawley Senior High School in Scotland Neck, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1962, proudly serving as a paratrooper until his honorable discharge in 1964. Following his military service, George embarked on a distinguished career working with NASA and the Cash Register Organization, where his dedication and work ethic were exemplified. Those who knew George will fondly remember his vibrant spirit and infectious sense of humor. Known for his jokes and lighthearted nature, he had a unique ability to bring smiles to those around him. His greatest joy came from being surrounded by his family, and he cherished every moment spent with them. George was married to the late Elsie Marie Smith and shared a special relationship with Anne Jane Brady, both of whom held significant places in his heart. As a man of great character and love, his influence extended well beyond his immediate family, touching the lives of everyone he encountered. A service to honor George's remarkable life will be held on October 2, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, located at 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, MD 20623. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at Forestville Rehabilitation Center for their compassionate care over the last decade, where George found happiness and comfort. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in George's memory to a charity of your choice, continuing his legacy of generosity and kindness. George Dempsey Smith's memory will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and all who had the honor of knowing him. May he rest in eternal peace.
