In Loving Memory

George Albert Mendelson
January 3, 1923 — January 10, 2021
It is with profound gratitude for a life well-lived and a heart full of love that we announce the peaceful passing of George Albert Mendelson on January 10, 2021, at the age of 98. George left this world surrounded by the warmth and love of his cherished family, in the comfort of his own home.
George was born on January 3, 1923, in the quaint town of Watertown, Minnesota, to Kobe and Eliza (Nordling) Mendelson. He was the beloved brother of the late Edward, Art, Lauren, and Regina, and his sister Elizabeth Hudek, who survives him, along with his dear sister-in-law, Emma Mendelson.
In 1941, George proudly graduated from Watertown Sr. High School, setting the foundation for a lifetime of learning and teaching. Shortly after, he answered the call to serve his country, joining the Marines during World War II from 1941 to 1945. Following his honorable service, George returned to civilian life and embarked on a career that would define his legacy.
George began his professional journey working as a barber from 1946 to 1951, but his true passion lay in sharing knowledge. He dedicated 37 years of his life to teaching history at Delano High School, where he inspired countless students with his wit and wisdom. His love for history extended beyond the classroom, as he devoted almost three decades to volunteering at the Wright County Historical Society, nurturing a community’s appreciation for its rich past.
On March 5, 1950, George married the love of his life, Shirley DeMars, at Saint Peter’s Church in Delano, a place he held dear for 70 years as a devout member. Together, they built a beautiful family, raising four sons: Harry, John, Eddie, and Charlie. George was a proud grandfather to 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and recently celebrated the joy of welcoming two great-great-grandchildren into the world.
George's commitment to his community was unwavering. He was an active member of the Delano VFW for 68 years and participated in numerous local fundraisers, always eager to lend a helping hand and a kind word.
A man of many interests, George found joy in the simple pleasures of history and writing. His wit was legendary; he had a knack for storytelling that could light up a room and bring smiles to those around him.
George is predeceased by his loving wife, Shirley, his parents, siblings, nephews Michael and Bob Mendelson, and brothers-in-law Roy Kalstrom, Henry Uecker, and Ray Hudek, as well as his sister-in-law Paula Mendelson. His legacy of love, laughter, and learning lives on through his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
At George's request, a private funeral ceremony will be held on April 22, 2026, to honor the memory of a remarkable man whose life touched so many. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Wright County Historical Society or Saint Peter’s Church in Delano, continuing George’s lifelong dedication to education and community service.
Though he is no longer with us, George Albert Mendelson's spirit will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends. His life was a testament to kindness, dedication, and love, and he will be dearly missed.
