The world became a little dimmer on May 15, 2026, as we said goodbye to Gayle Ann Clawson, who passed away peacefully at her home after a lengthy and courageous battle with complications from Multiple Sclerosis and Dementia. Born on September 20, 1944, in the serene town of Montrose, Colorado, Gayle was the cherished daughter of the late Paul and Grace Wallace. Gayle’s life was a testament to resilience, love, and uncompromising strength. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend who touched the lives of many with her unwavering spirit and boundless kindness. She was predeceased by her beloved parents, Paul and Grace Wallace, whose values and love she carried forward throughout her life. She leaves behind a loving family who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts: her devoted husband and best friend, William Clawson, with whom she shared a beautiful journey of love and companionship. The couple married on Valentine’s Day in 1996 in the vibrant city of Las Vegas, marking the beginning of a 30-year adventure filled with travel and shared dreams, exploring the wonders of the country and Europe hand in hand. She is also survived by her son, Gary Cook, and his wife Sandy, who were the source of immense pride and joy in her life. Gayle's legacy extends to her cherished grandchildren, Ethan Cook and his wife Natalia, and Ian Cook, who brought endless happiness to her days. Her brother Ralph Wallace and his wife Shirley Sweet will forever remember her as a guiding light in their lives. Gayle’s early years in Montrose were marked by a nurturing upbringing that emphasized the importance of education and community. A proud graduate of Montrose High School in 1962, she embarked on a career that spanned decades in Federal Civil Service, concluding with her retirement from the IRS as an auditor in 1995. Not one to rest on her laurels, she continued her career with the Arizona Department of Revenue, retiring once more in 2009, and also contributed her knowledge and leadership skills to H&R Block as a regional manager for several years. Her professional life was marked by diligence, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, earning her the respect and admiration of colleagues and friends alike. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Gayle discovered a passion for powerlifting at the age of 60, a testament to her tenacity and determination. Competing in state, national, and world powerlifting competitions, she achieved the remarkable feat of holding a world record for deadlifting 341 pounds in her age group, inspiring all who knew her with her strength and perseverance. As we gather to remember Gayle Ann Clawson, we celebrate a life lived with grace, courage, and a heart full of love. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her, reminding us all of the power of resilience and the beauty of a life well-lived. A private memorial service will be held in her honor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Gayle’s name to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Alzheimer's Association, causes close to her heart. Gayle’s light will forever guide us, her love will forever embrace us, and her spirit will forever be a part of us. Rest in peace, dear Gayle. You will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered.
