Gary Steven Coggin

June 12, 1957 — May 22, 2026

With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Gary Steven Coggin, who went home peacefully with his family by his side on May 22, 2026. Born on June 12, 1957, in the beautiful setting of Oahu, Hawaii, Gary was a man whose life was as vibrant as the island itself, and whose legacy will endure in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. Gary was the beloved son of E. Diane and Max Coggin, who instilled in him the values of kindness, service, and integrity that he carried throughout his life. He shared these values with his cherished wife, Holly J. Coggin, and together they created a loving family, with their children Sara and Andrew, who were the pride of Gary’s life. His joy in family extended to his sisters, Marilyn Froehler and Andrea Donnelly, and a host of extended relatives and friends who enriched his journey. A man of service, Gary dedicated 34 years of his life to the City of Norfolk as a firefighter, retiring with honor and the respect of colleagues and community alike. His commitment to helping others was as steadfast as the flames he faced, and he leaves behind a legacy of bravery and compassion. Gary was a longtime member of Thalia Lynn Baptist Church, where his voice was a beacon of joy in the choir. His sausage balls were a cherished treat among fellow congregants, symbolizing his generous spirit. Gary's involvement with the Norfolk Retired Firefighters Association was another testament to his enduring commitment to those he served alongside. His love of music extended beyond the church, as he lent his powerful voice to singing the National Anthem for the Norfolk Tides and at the Richmond Speedway, stirring the hearts of those who listened. Gary had a knack for fixing things and took great pleasure in teaching others how to do the same. He was known for the best bear hugs, a warm embrace that conveyed his love and support. Whether tinkering around in the garage, building model cars, or mowing the grass on his John Deere, Gary found joy in life's simple pleasures. Gary leaves behind a legacy of love and service, survived by his wife Holly, his children Sara and Andrew, his sisters Marilyn and Andrea, and a grandchild who will grow up surrounded by stories of their grandfather’s warmth and wisdom. His life was a testament to the power of love, community, and service, and he will be deeply missed. As we remember Gary, let us honor his memory by embracing life with the same kindness and generosity he showed to all. His spirit lives on in those he touched, and while we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
