Gary Michael Opsal

Gary Michael Opsal, passed away on June 28, 2026, at the age of 65. Born on June 11, 1961, in Oak Park, Illinois, Gary was the cherished son of Dolores Opsal (née Demski) and Richard Opsal, both of whom predeceased him. Growing up in Franklin Park, Illinois, Gary's journey was marked by a profound love for horses that began at the tender age of 12. A visit to a neighboring horse stable that offered daily trail rides sparked a lifelong passion, which would become the cornerstone of his career and legacy. Gary dedicated his life to thoroughbred horse training, carving out a respected career in the racing circuits of California. His commitment to the sport and the animals he loved was evident in every aspect of his work, and he was known for his gentle touch and deep understanding of the equine spirit. He leaves behind his son, Ryan Opsal, his sisters, Susan (Raymond) Salvesen and Mary (Patrick) Nelson, and nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephew. Distance and circumstances kept us apart for many years but Gary was always in our hearts. We loved him dearly.
