November 26, 1935 — June 13, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Kunka, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Gary peacefully departed this world on June 13, 2026, at Twin Oaks Manor, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, laughter, and love. Born on November 26, 1935, in Shattuck, Oklahoma, Gary was the beloved son of Frank and Coralea Kunka. He carried forth the values and lessons instilled by his parents throughout his life, influencing all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Predeceased by his parents, his brother Kay, and his sister Fran Winn, Gary's memory remains a testament to the enduring bond of family. Gary's formative years were spent in Follett, Texas, where he graduated from Follett High School in 1954. His thirst for knowledge led him to West Texas State University, where he earned a degree in Education in 1958. This educational foundation laid the groundwork for his esteemed career in the Follett school system, where he dedicated 35 remarkable years as a teacher, coach, and elementary principal. Alongside his educational career, Gary was a man of diverse talents, owning and operating a farm, a fertilizer business, and a fuel mart in the Follett area. In 1958, Gary answered the call to serve his country, joining the US Army. Though his time in service was brief due to a medical discharge, his dedication and patriotism were unwavering. On November 25, 1990, Gary married the love of his life, Vicki, with whom he shared 35 beautiful years. Their life together was filled with laughter, joy, and countless cherished memories. He is survived by his devoted wife Vicki; his sons Galen and Kelly; his stepdaughters Stacy, Mandy, and Toni; his brother Glen; as well as 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and numerous spouses and significant others whom he embraced as family. Gary was a man of many passions. An avid fisherman, he seized every opportunity to cast a line into the waters, finding peace and happiness in nature's embrace. He also delighted in the thrill of hunting, gardening, and the camaraderie of watching sports with friends and family. Known for his mischievous spirit, Gary had a knack for playing practical jokes on those he loved, often laughing so heartily at his own antics that he would slap his knee in sheer amusement. A celebration of Gary's life will be held on June 19, 2026, at the Follett Methodist Church. In honor of his lifelong commitment to education and community, donations may be made to the Follett Education Corporation or the Follett Methodist Church. As we mourn the loss of a truly remarkable man, we find solace in the special message from his family: "So when tomorrow starts without me, don't think we're far apart. For every time you think of me, I'm right there in your heart." Gary Kunka's life was a testament to the power of love, laughter, and friendship. His presence will be profoundly missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
