January 9, 1941 — September 19, 2026
Gary Joseph Zimmerman, a cherished member of the Council Bluffs community, passed away peacefully at his home on September 19, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on January 9, 1941, in Westphalia, Iowa, Gary was the beloved son of Joseph and Billie (Stokes) Zimmerman. His life was a testament to service, family, and music, leaving a legacy of warmth and joy for all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Gary's life was marked by his dedication to service, both in his country and his community. After graduating from St. Francis High School in Council Bluffs, he served honorably in the United States Air Force. Following his military service, Gary committed over 34 years to the Council Bluffs Police Department, retiring as a Captain. His leadership and integrity earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the community he served so diligently.
On April 4, 1964, Gary married the love of his life, Barbara Ann Tadlock. Their marriage was a beautiful partnership that spanned over five decades until Barbara's passing in 2021. Together, they nurtured a loving family, raising three sons: Anthony (Melinda) of Keller, TX; Michael (Kristi) of Omaha, NE; and Timothy (Denise) of Bellevue, NE. Gary was a proud grandfather to Amanda Jones (Aaron), Zack Zimmerman (Megan), Hunter Zimmerman (Lexie), Hailee Zimmerman, Dawson and Hanna Wills, Brandon Clapper, Dustin Slottje (Ashley), Linda Slottje, and Janet McCoy (Jeff). His legacy continues with his great-grandchildren: Arlo, Colette, Beckham, Zoe, Elsie, and Zachary. He is also survived by his sisters Sandra Childers, Christine Davis (Jim), and Terri Lynne Polson, along with many nieces and nephews.
A man of many talents, Gary was an active member of the Holy Family Church, where he served as the choir director for many years, sharing his love of music with the congregation. His passion for singing led him to perform at countless weddings and funerals, bringing comfort and joy through his voice. He also enjoyed his time as a member of the Plain Labels music group and was a former Cub Scout leader for the Webelos. Beyond his musical pursuits, Gary was known for his quick wit, warm smile, and hospitable nature, always welcoming family and friends into his home for gatherings filled with laughter, good food, and cherished memories.
In his leisure time, Gary found joy in cooking and gardening, nurturing both plants and relationships with equal care. His garden was not just a testament to his green thumb but also a gathering place where stories were shared and bonds were strengthened.
Gary is predeceased by his parents, his wife Barbara, and his brother Kevin Griffith. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
