It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Gary Gates, who departed this earth on May 22, 2026, in the comforting embrace of his family and the gentle guidance of his faith. Born in Iowa City, IA, on July 26, 1966, Gary's journey was one defined by love, laughter, and unwavering loyalty to those he held dear. Gary was the beloved son of Marlys Geyer and Ron Gates. He was predeceased by his cherished mother, Marlys, his brothers Ron Jr. and Tim Gates, and his sweet granddaughter, Ariona Dorn. Despite these profound losses, Gary's heart remained open and full, nurturing deep connections with his surviving family: his devoted wife of 30 years, Sandy DornGates, his children Elizabeth (Micki) Schirmer, Jeff DornGates, Jaye (Jason) Dorn-Kastli, John Dorn, and Jessie (Cody) Cole. He was a proud grandfather to over 23 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter, who will carry forth his legacy with love and fond memories. On February 10, 1996, Gary and Sandy embarked on a lifelong partnership, a union marked by resilience and devotion. They celebrated their enduring love by renewing their vows on February 10, 2018, reaffirming their commitment to each other through life's peaks and valleys. Gary's career was a tapestry of diverse experiences. He found joy in his work at Raising Canes in Cedar Falls and cherished the years spent driving semis for various companies. However, it was during the 1990s, working and traveling with Frey Amusements Carnival, that Gary discovered a profound sense of adventure and camaraderie. A man of many interests, Gary was affectionately known as "Popz" within the Inter City M/C bike club, where he found a community that embraced him wholeheartedly. His passions extended to bowling, stock car racing, and pool—often enjoyed with a cold Busch Light in hand. Whether camping with family or cheering at WWE wrestling events, Gary's joy was infectious, and his spirit was uncontainable. A service to honor Gary's life will be held on June 13, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Cedar Falls Christian Church, located at 2727 W. 4th Street, Cedar Falls, IA. Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of a life so well-lived. In lieu of tears, the family invites you to join them for a Celebration of Life on July 25, 2026, at Kugler’s in Evansdale, IA, in honor of what would have been Gary's 60th birthday. The day will begin with a bike ride, a fitting tribute to a man who embraced the open road and the freedom it represented. Gary Gates touched the hearts of all who knew him with his warmth, humor, and unyielding spirit. As we remember him, let us celebrate the joy he brought into our lives and honor the legacy of love and kindness he leaves behind.
