Deacon Garfield Johnson Jr.

Garfield was born on August 15, 1954, in Eutaw, Alabama, to the late Garfield Johnson Sr. and Julia Finch Sanders. He was later lovingly raised by his stepfather, the late Richard Sanders. Garfield was the younger brother of the late Milton Johnson and is survived by his devoted siblings, Moses Finch and Wanda King, along with her husband, Rodney Sr. A graduate of Tuscaloosa County High School in 1972, Garfield pursued his education at Yankton College in South Dakota. He found his professional calling as a Certified Orthopedic Technologist, dedicating 20 years to the Alabama Orthopedic and Spine Center. His commitment to his craft was evident as he earned a seat on the National Association of Orthopedic Technologists board, a testament to his expertise and dedication. On July 5, 1980, Garfield married the love of his life, Merie Prewitt Johnson, at First Baptist Church Northport. Their union, which spanned over 46 years, was a testament to the power of love and partnership. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Justin Johnson (Jacqueline Freeman), and Whitney Johnson, who were the pride and joy of Garfield’s life. Garfield was an active member of the First Baptist Church Northport community for over 65 years, serving as a deacon and sharing his voice with the choir. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he found immense joy in spreading the Gospel and uplifting others through song and service. An avid outdoorsman, Garfield found peace in nature. Whether hunting, fishing, or riding his motorcycle, he embraced life with enthusiasm and joy. He was also known for his quick wit and warm smile, always ready with a joke to lighten the mood. His gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Garfield’s legacy of kindness, generosity, and love will continue to live on through his family and the countless lives he touched. He will be sorely missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
