Galen Harold Putuguq Swan

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Galen Swan, a cherished father, son, brother, and friend, who left this world on August 13, 2026, at the age of 55. Galen's journey came to a peaceful end at the Alaska Native Medical Center, surrounded by compassionate medical staff and his beloved daughter, Jaisse, at his side. Born on December 26, 1970, in the close-knit community of Kotzebue, Alaska, Galen was the son of Fred and Edith Swan. His life was deeply rooted in love and family, with a lineage that included his grandparents, Lewis and Martha Swan, and George and Maggie Melton, who preceded him in death. Galen also joins his father, Fred, and numerous cherished aunties, uncles, and cousins who went before him. Galen's legacy is carried forward by his devoted mother, Edith Swan, and his daughter, Jaisse Swan, along with her mother, Jackie. He is also survived by his siblings: Lulu Swan and her son, Frederick; Aurora Iyatungak and her family, including Jonathan Elzra and their children, Talia, Nolan, and Leo, Adam Fischer and his daughter, Nyla, and Katherine Fischer and her children, Noah and Willow; and David Melton alongside Gertie Melton and their daughters, Maggie, Serena Sours, and Megan. Brother-in-law, John Iyatungak, along with cousins Dennis Swan Sr., Albert Norton Jr., and Enoch Boyaaq Norton, and countless friends and extended family, also mourn his passing. Galen's educational journey led him from Kivalina McQueen School to RAHI in Fairbanks, with further studies at UAF. His professional life was marked by roles that reflected his dedication to his community, serving as a Security Guard at Brother Francis Shelter and as Mayor and VPSO of Kivalina City, where he also held a position as a City Council Member. A gifted musician, Galen's passion for the guitar and banjo was inspired by his father and uncles. His robust singing voice, though sometimes out of tune, was a testament to his unwavering spirit and determination to perfect his craft. Galen's love for music was matched by his love for hunting alongside his father and uncles, and his joy in gathering with loved ones, often with a guitar in hand. Galen's life will be celebrated at a service on August 20, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Legacy Funeral Home, located at 440 E Klatt Road, Anchorage, Alaska. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in Galen's memory. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to NANA, Maniilaq, KIC, Kivalina IRA, Alaska Native Medical Center, and the many family and friends whose love and support have been a source of comfort during this difficult time. Galen Swan will forever be remembered for his warmth, resilience, and the indelible mark he left on the hearts of those who knew him. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the love and music that filled his life.
