In Loving Memory

Gail Ellison
July 4, 1940 — April 6, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gail Ellison, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Gail left us on April 6, 2026, at the age of 85, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Born on July 4, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan, she was the cherished daughter of Richard and Marie (Merila) Hatch.
Gail's life was a testament to resilience, love, and dedication. A graduate of Redford High School in 1958, she went on to carve out a successful career as a secretary for the American Motors Corporation, where she worked diligently for many years, earning the respect and admiration of her colleagues.
In 1982, Gail married her second husband, Michael Ellison, in a beautiful ceremony in Plymouth, Michigan. Together, they shared 39 wonderful years of marriage until Michael's passing. Their union was a testament to love and partnership, and their home was always filled with laughter and warmth.
Gail was a woman of remarkable strength and character, raising three children—Gregg, Scott, and Karen—with unwavering love and dedication. Her children remember her as a mother who balanced strength with kindness, always providing them with the support and guidance they needed to thrive. Her direct wit and generosity were the hallmarks of her personality, endearing her to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Gail had a passion for creativity, finding joy in painting and jewelry making. She also loved shopping, often finding the perfect gift for loved ones or a little treasure for herself. Her creative spirit was reflected in the vibrant pieces she created, each a testament to her artistic soul.
Family was the cornerstone of Gail’s life, and she cherished every moment spent with her loved ones. She is survived by her devoted children, Gregg (Dawn), Scott (Katherine), and Karen (Curt Dame), along with her brother, Thomas Hatch. Gail was the proud grandmother of eleven grandchildren—Darcy McBroom, Darren Blach, Tiffany Updike, Tony Updike, Brandon Updike, Stephen Updike, Jordan Updike, Ryan Updike, Amelia Dame, and Mitchell Dame—and the adoring great-grandmother of Emma Rose, all of whom brought immense joy to her life.
Gail is predeceased by her loving husband, Michael Ellison, her parents, Richard and Marie Hatch, and her sister, Sharon (Hatch) Durham. Her memory will forever be cherished by her family and friends, whose lives she touched with her kindness and grace.
In her honor, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Parkinson's Foundation, a cause close to Gail's heart. Donations can be made online at Parkinson's Foundation.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Butterfly Oasis and Gentiva Hospice for the compassionate care they provided to Gail during her final days. Their kindness and support brought comfort to Gail and her family during this difficult time.
Gail Ellison's life was a rich tapestry of love, laughter, and resilience. She leaves behind a legacy of strength and compassion that will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be dearly missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she loved.
