Gail Ellison
July 4, 1940 — April 6, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gail Ellison, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who left this world peacefully on April 6, 2026, at the age of 85. Gail passed away after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease, surrounded by the warmth of her family and the love that she so generously gave throughout her life.
Born on July 4, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan, Gail was a cherished daughter of Richard and Marie (Merila) Hatch. She was blessed with a nurturing home that fostered her vibrant spirit, sense of humor, and the generosity for which she was known throughout her life. Gail was predeceased by her parents, her loving husband of 39 years, Michael Ellison, her sister Sharon (Hatch) Durham, and her precious granddaughter, Alexandra Updike.
Gail graduated from Redford High School in 1958, a place where she not only received her education but also formed lifelong friendships that enriched her journey. She was a woman of immense strength and resilience, raising her three children, Gregg, Scott, and Karen, with unwavering dedication and love. Her children, along with their spouses Dawn, Katherine, and Curt Dame, were a testament to her nurturing spirit and the values she instilled in them.
In addition to her children, Gail is survived by her brother Thomas Hatch, who shared in her life's joys and sorrows; eleven grandchildren—Darcy McBroom, Darren Blach, Tiffany Updike, Tony Updike, Brandon Updike, Stephen Updike, Jordan Updike, Ryan Updike, Amelia Dame, and Mitchell Dame—who were the light of her life; and her great-grandchild, Emma Rose, who brought her immense joy and hope for the future.
Gail's life was adorned with creativity and passion. She found joy in painting and jewelry making, and her artistic talents were a reflection of her vibrant inner world. She had an undeniable flair for shopping, always seeking out treasures that brought delight to her and those around her.
Known for her direct wit and boundless generosity, Gail was a beacon of support and advice for those fortunate enough to know her. Her laughter was infectious, and her presence brought comfort and warmth to everyone she encountered.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Butterfly Oasis and Gentiva Hospice for the compassionate care they provided Gail in her final days. Their kindness and support are deeply appreciated.
In honor of Gail's life and her fight with Parkinson's disease, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Parkinson's Foundation at Parkinson's Foundation to continue the fight against this challenging disease.
A celebration of Gail's life will be held at a later date, where friends and family will gather to remember the extraordinary woman who touched so many lives with her kindness, humor, and unwavering love.
Gail Ellison's legacy lives on in the hearts of those she loved, and she will be dearly missed but never forgotten. May her soul rest in peace.
