In Loving Memory

Gail Ellison
July 4, 1940 — April 6, 2026
It is with profound sadness and deep reflection that we announce the passing of Gail Ellison, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Gail departed this world on April 6, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. She was 85 years old.
Born on July 4, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan, Gail Mary Hatch was a beacon of independence and resilience from an early age. Raised mainly by her mother, Marie (Merila) Hatch, Gail's formative years were imbued with the lessons of strength and grace, which she carried throughout her life. Gail was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 39 years, Michael Ellison, whom she married on November 20, 1982, in Plymouth, Michigan. Their union was marked by love, companionship, and unwavering support.
Gail's life was a testament to perseverance and dedication. After graduating from Redford High School in 1958, where she forged many lifelong friendships, she embarked on a journey of motherhood that would define much of her character. As a single mother, she raised her three children—Gregg (Dawn), Scott (Katherine), and Karen (Curt Dame)—with a unique blend of direct wit and boundless generosity. Her children were her pride, and she nurtured them with a love that knew no bounds.
In addition to her children, Gail is survived by her brother, Thomas Hatch, and her cherished grandchildren: Darcy McBroom, Darren Blach, Tiffany Updike, Tony Updike, Brandon Updike, Stephen Updike, Jordan Updike, Ryan Updike, Amelia Dame, and Mitchell Dame, as well as her great-grandchild, Emma Rose. She was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Marie Hatch; her sister, Sharon (Hatch) Durham; and her granddaughter, Alexandra Updike.
A woman of many talents, Gail found joy in painting, jewelry making, and shopping—pastimes that brought color and creativity into her everyday life. Her artistic pursuits were not just hobbies; they were expressions of her vibrant spirit and zest for life.
As we remember Gail, we celebrate her legacy of love, humor, and unyielding strength. Her direct, witty remarks left an indelible mark on those who knew her, and her generous heart was felt by many. She lived a life that was both full and impactful, touching everyone she encountered.
In honor of Gail's life and her courageous fight against Parkinson's disease, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Parkinson's Foundation. Contributions can be made online at Parkinson's Foundation.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Butterfly Oasis and Gentiva Hospice for their compassionate care during Gail's final days. Their dedication and kindness provided comfort and peace to Gail and her loved ones.
A memorial service to celebrate Gail's life will be held at a later date, where friends and family will gather to honor a remarkable woman who touched so many lives.
Gail Ellison's journey on this earth has ended, but her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those she loved and those who loved her. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
