September 24, 1959 — June 1, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and fond memories that we announce the passing of Gail Alberteen Jones, who left this world on June 1, 2026, after a courageous battle with COPD. Gail was a beloved daughter, devoted partner, nurturing mother, cherished grandmother, and loyal sister. Born on September 24, 1959, in Detroit, Michigan, Gail was the daughter of the late Albert and Anita Jones, whose nurturing love laid the foundation for her remarkable life. Gail’s journey began in the bustling city of Detroit, where she flourished in the local public schools, forging friendships and developing the strong values that would guide her throughout her life. She was a proud employee of Tower Automotive for over a decade, where her dedication and warm spirit made her a treasured colleague. Later, she joined Chrysler, but an unforeseen injury led to her early retirement. Gail's culinary talents were legendary. Her soul food was not just a meal but an experience, bringing joy to her co-workers and family alike. Her rum-soaked pound cake was a testament to her mastery in the kitchen—an indulgence that remains unmatched. Gail's presence at family reunions was marked by her delicious dishes like fried corn, gumbo, and zucchini boats, each prepared with love and a sprinkle of her unique charm. Her passions extended beyond the kitchen. Gail had an unyielding love for her family, and her home was a gallery of memories, adorned with photographs that captured the essence of those she held dear. Her love for old-school music was infectious, and she would often be seen enjoying a shot in the company of friends, her laughter a melody in itself. Gail's legacy is woven through the lives of those she leaves behind: her long-term partner of 15 years, Derrick Walker; her son, Damany Ajene Jones; and her adored grandchildren, Patrick, Damani David, and Kali Jones. She shared a special bond with her grandson Patrick, whom she lovingly raised to adulthood, and filled a nurturing space in her grandson David's life. Her siblings, Luther Carr (Loretta Carr), Judith Ann Buycks (Alfred Buycks), Anita Jones, Lucille Shelton, and Jennifer Jones, held a special place in her heart. Gail's admiration and pride in her sisters were boundless; she was their biggest cheerleader. Her nephews, Amas and Bello, and nieces, Amber and Nadja, along with many cousins and dear friends, including Sandi and June, will forever remember her wisdom, wit, and raw humor. Gail was a member of Greater Grace Detroit, participating occasionally, but her faith and connection to her community were unwavering. Her life was a testament to resilience, love, and laughter—a beacon of strength for all who knew her. Gail joins her predeceased family members—her grandparents Luther and Lucy Carr, parents Albert and Anita Jones, and brother Matthew James Jones—in eternal rest. While her earthly presence will be deeply missed, the memories of her vibrant life will continue to inspire and comfort us. A celebration of Gail’s life will be held to honor her incredible journey. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions to organizations supporting those affected by COPD, a cause close to Gail's heart. Rest in peace, dear Gail. You have left a lasting imprint on our hearts, and your legacy will endure in the stories we share and the love we carry forward.
