Frederick Dallas West Sr

January 18, 1931 — September 16, 2026

Frederick Dallas West Sr., a beloved patriarch and cherished friend, peacefully departed this life on September 16, 2026, returning to the embrace of his Creator and his dearly missed wife, Mattie Maudette West. Born on January 18, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, Frederick was the loving son of Susie M. Clark West and Andrew West. He also treasured the guidance and companionship of his Godfather, George “GD” Anderson. Frederick's life was a tapestry of rich experiences and heartfelt connections. A graduate of Englewood High School, he proudly served his country as a cook in the Army, a role that not only allowed him to hone his culinary skills but also fueled his insatiable curiosity and zest for life. His career path was as varied as it was remarkable. He dedicated years to working on the railroad before following his entrepreneurial spirit to establish a recording studio on Stony Island, where he nurtured and promoted emerging vocal talents. Alongside his brothers Andrew and Theodore, Frederick co-founded the Brothers Three Fish House, a beloved establishment that thrived until health challenges necessitated its closure. He later brought his skills to AT&T, where his self-taught expertise as a machinist and maintenance engineer earned him respect until his retirement. Frederick's heart was as expansive as his interests. He was a jazz aficionado, whose love for music was rivaled only by his devotion to his family and community. A pillar of the West Pullman neighborhood, he was known for his generosity and leadership. His annual back-to-school events, complete with school supplies, clothing, and an abundance of food, were legendary. Weekends often found him at the grill, serving meals to neighbors. His dedication to uplifting his community did not go unnoticed; he was honored by the late Mayor Daley with a plaque recognizing his extraordinary contributions. Frederick's legacy is lovingly carried forward by his children—Deborah West Townsend, Frederick D. West Jr., Donyale West McDaniels, and Marilyn Atkins—as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the lights of his life. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will forever hold his memory dear. Preceding him in death are his siblings Dorothy Hardin, Andrew, and Theodore West, and his daughter Roselyn Scott. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to caregiver Tasha Chase for her dedicated service and compassion. A celebration of Frederick's life will be held on September 24, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Golden Gate Funeral Home, located at 2036 W 79th, Chicago, IL 60620.
