In Loving Memory

Freda Jean Cox-Harris
June 9, 1952 — October 11, 2026
Freda Jean Cox-Harris, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, peacefully transitioned into the Lord's embrace on October 11, 2026. Born on June 9, 1952, in Cleveland, Mississippi, Freda was the cherished daughter of Willie Lee Cox and Edna Harris, both of whom preceded her in death along with her brothers Willie Cox Jr., Danny Cox, Kevin Cox, and sister Belinda Cox.
Freda's life was a tapestry of love and dedication. She shared 42 wonderful years with her devoted husband, Paris D. Harris, whom she married on June 18, 1988, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Together, they built a nurturing home filled with laughter and joy, raising five children: James Martin Jr., Erbrina A.J. Tucker, Paris (Bridget) Harris, Ramon Harris, and Shelley Harris. Freda's loving spirit extended to her 38 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, each of whom she adored deeply.
Educated and driven, Freda graduated from Westside High School in 1971. Her thirst for knowledge led her to earn two associate degrees from Ivy Tech College, a Bachelor's degree from Calumet College of St. Joseph, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Indiana Wesleyan College. Her academic achievements were matched by her professional commitment as the Accessibility Services Coordinator at Indiana University Northwest, where she dedicated over a decade to supporting students. Her colleague, Barbara Gun, was a steadfast partner in this mission.
A woman of faith, Freda was a lifelong member of the Churches of Christ, living out her Christian principles with grace and warmth. Her vibrant personality and welcoming nature left a lasting impression on all who met her. Freda was a beacon of positivity, whose caring and inclusive spirit was felt by everyone she encountered.
Freda had a zest for life, especially in her passions for fitness and culinary delights. From step aerobics to becoming a Zumba guru, she inspired many with her energetic commitment to health and wellness.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to all who knew and loved Freda for their unwavering support. Special thanks go to cousin Melva Andrews (DeeDee) for standing by Freda throughout her cancer journey, and to her dear nieces, Kia Marie and Rosetta, for their unyielding love and support.
A celebration of Freda's life will be held on October 20, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Guy and Allen Funeral Services, located at 2959 West 11th Ave., Gary, Indiana 46404. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Conquer Cancer Foundation (American Society Of Clinical Oncology) in her memory.
As we bid farewell to Freda, we carry forward the legacy of her love, strength, and faith. Her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched.
