December 25, 1936 — October 29, 2026

Fred McNatt, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, peacefully passed away on October 29, 2026, in the warmth of his home. Born on December 25, 1936, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Fred lived a life that was full of love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community. Fred was a man of profound kindness and an approachable nature, attributes that endeared him to everyone he met. He was often described as the easiest person to talk to, and his warmth extended to all people, making him a beloved figure in every community he was part of. In 1955, Fred married the love of his life, Peggy Johnson, and together they embarked on a beautiful journey that spanned over seven decades. Their love story began in Miami, where Fred opened his own barbershop, a place where conversations flowed as freely as the hair that fell to the floor. After five years, Fred and Peggy moved to Ashland, Alabama, where they lovingly raised their family. Fred's academic journey led him to earn an MBA from the University of Penn State, a testament to his dedication and diligence. Though he did not serve in the military, Fred was a staunch supporter of the US Army, a reflection of his deep respect for those who served. Fred and Peggy shared a unique passion for exploring the beauty of America. Instead of settling into a single organization or club, they chose to travel across all 50 states, immersing themselves in the diverse landscapes and cultures of the nation. In his personal time, Fred found joy in fixing up old vehicles, a hobby that connected him with history and craftsmanship. He was also an avid birdwatcher, finding peace in the gentle flutter of wings and the songs of nature. Above all, Fred cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always the doting and playful presence in their lives. Fred is lovingly remembered by his wife, Peggy McNatt, and their children: Fred McNatt, Norman McNatt, and Mary Childs. His legacy continues through his 16 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents and his dear daughter, Blanch. A celebration of Fred's life will be held on October 31, 2026, at 11:59 AM, at Benefield Funeral Homes located at 85499 Highway 9, Ashland, AL 36251. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Fred's caregivers and all who contributed to the beautiful ceremony honoring his life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charity of your choice in Fred's memory, as a way to continue his legacy of kindness and support for others.
