Franklin William Copanas Jr
June 17, 1938 — April 27, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Franklin William Copanas Jr, affectionately known as Bill, on April 27, 2026, at the age of 87. Bill's remarkable journey, marked by love, service, and resilience, came to a serene close at Fairmont Senior Living on Clayton in St. Louis after a commendable battle with Myasthenia gravis.
Born on June 17, 1938, in St. Louis, Bill was the cherished son of Franklin W. Copanas Senior and Nancy Copanas (Mitchell). His early life was rooted in the values of family and community, which he continued to nurture throughout his life. He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Jim and Robert (Bob), and his sister Nancy Aubuchon, leaving behind a legacy of love and memories.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Copanas (Warner), who stood by his side through life's many seasons. Together, they raised two beloved sons, Franklin (Frank) William Copanas III and Trent Alan Copanas, and extended their hearts and home to foster six children, serving as special probation officers to many others. Their home at 1803 Bend Road in Cape Girardeau, MO, was a testament to their shared dreams and labor of love.
Bill's career was defined by dedication and excellence. He spent most of his adult life with Missouri (now Ameren), culminating as the Head of Corrosion and Engineering at the time of his retirement. His commitment to his work mirrored his commitment to community service. As a Scout Master and district-level leader in The Boy Scouts of America, Bill received the prestigious Silver Beaver Award and was a proud member of the Order of the Arrow.
A man of varied interests, Bill and Betty were avid antique collectors with a keen eye for Westmorland milk glass, Van Briggle pottery, and dragon statues. Bill's passion for cycling was evident in his daily rides and his collection of antique balloon-tire bicycles, reflecting his zest for life and adventure.
Bill's warmth, compassion, and integrity touched everyone he met. He was a listening ear and a guiding voice, generously sharing his wisdom with younger family members and offering assistance to those in need through his rental properties. His spirit of kindness and generosity will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his wife and sons, Bill leaves behind his brother Tom Copanas and wife Sondra (Sonie), and his cherished grandchildren: Ryan Copanas Stoll, Gabriel Copanas, Connor Copanas, and Owen Copanas. He is also survived by many wonderful nieces, nephews, in-laws, and countless friends who became family over the years.
In accordance with Bill's wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Hospice for their compassionate care during Bill's final days.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find solace in the indelible legacy of love and dedication that Bill leaves behind. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a cause close to Bill's heart, ensuring that his spirit of generosity continues to touch lives.
May he rest in peace, knowing that his life was a blessing to all who had the privilege to know him.
