Frances James Hall
July 8, 1927 — October 7, 2026
Frances James Hall, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, passed peacefully in hospice care after a short illness on October 7, 2026, at the age of 99. Born on July 8, 1927, in York, South Carolina, Frances was the cherished daughter of Reverend James and Minnie Hall, both of whom predeceased her.
Frances shared a life filled with love and adventure with her husband, Edward Mason McGee Sr., with whom she had a son, Edward Mason McGee Jr. She was blessed with one grandson, Lutalo McGee and two great-granddaughters, Jelani McGee and Ajani McGee-Watson, who all brought immense joy to her life. Frances is survived by her son Edward, her grandchild, great grandchildren, and a host of close friends, all of whom will forever carry her memory in their hearts.
Frances was a pioneering educator, having graduated with a bachelor's degree in education and later obtaining a master's degree in social work. Her passion for teaching enriched the lives of countless children during her many years as a dedicated teacher in Chicago, IL. A lifelong learner, Frances became a master teacher and left a lasting legacy of knowledge and inspiration. She was also a devoted member of the Delta Sigma Theta Incorporated sorority.
An active member of the Cosmopolitan Community Church in Chicago, Frances devoted her time to the church's adult Sunday School and was known for her vibrant participation in community life. Her love for traveling, bridge, and learning was infectious, and when she could no longer attend bridge tournaments in person, she embraced technology to continue playing online.
Frances's intelligence, quick wit, and sophisticated beauty were hallmarks of her character. Her infectious smile and twinkling eyes brought warmth to everyone around her. She was a source of wisdom and sound advice, fully participating in life with grace and enthusiasm. Though she had no siblings, Frances created a large extended family of in-laws, friends, and their families, all of whom will deeply miss her presence.
A celebration of Frances's remarkable life will take place on October 15, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Cosmopolitan Community Church, located at 5249 S. Wabash Avenue, Chicago, IL. The family invites those who knew and loved Frances to join them in honoring her memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Frances's memory. They extend their heartfelt thanks to the caregivers, hospice staff, medical team, and all those who provided care and comfort to Frances and her family during her final days. Your kindness and support will never be forgotten.
Frances James Hall lived a full and vibrant life, leaving behind a legacy of love, learning, and laughter. She will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched with her kindness and wisdom.
