FRANCES GRADY

Frances Grady, beloved mother, grandmother, and aunt, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2026, surrounded by her daughter, grandson Michael, and the dedicated professionals at Lower Cape Fear Hospice. She was born on January 21, 1929, in Brooklyn, NY. She raised her daughter in Richmond Hill, NY, then moved to Melbourne, Florida. She later moved in with her daughter and family on LI, NY, and relocated with her daughter to Leland, NC. Frances lived a life marked by resilience and strength. Frances was the daughter of Marion and Frederick Dittrich. She is predeceased by her mother Marion Doyle; her sister, Marion Brazeil, and her cherished aunt, Emily Jaccoby. From a young age, Frances demonstrated a tenacious spirit and an indomitable will. She worked from a very young age and ultimately retired from Boarshead Provisions in Brooklyn. As a single mother, she worked tirelessly to provide a stable home for her daughter. Weekend day trips with her daughter, mother, and aunt included car rides to local sights and vacations. The trips were simple, not for the faint of heart, and there was always a story to be told. She loved country music and line dancing. She was amazing at knitting, crocheting, and sewing. Later in life, she could be found on her iPad checking Facebook, playing games, and reading her endless books. Her hearing loss deprived her of a lot of joy, sadly. But that iPad was a lifeline for her. Frances’ life was a testament to hard work. Her candid nature and forthright approach to life were hallmarks of her character. In accordance with her wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Frances' life and memory. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the exceptional staff at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare and the compassionate team on the 10th floor of Novant Hospital. Their support and kindness during this difficult journey provided immense comfort to Frances and her family, and to the many family and friends who have reached out with support and love. Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Frances Grady’s memory to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, an organization that provided invaluable support and compassion during her final days. Frances leaves behind her daughter Barbara Baumgarten, beloved grandson Michael Baumgarten, granddaughter Sarah Baumgarten and her wife Danielle, niece Ellen Griffin and her husband Michael Griffin, and nephew Thomas Brazeil, as well as the many cousins of the Jacoby and Griffin families. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished by her family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
