Frances Chappell

Frances Chappell, affectionately known as "Duke" to her cherished nieces and nephews, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, warmth, and kindness. Born on April 7, 1934, in Greenwood, South Carolina, Frances was the beloved daughter of the late Timothy and Sallie Mae Brooks Chappell, Sr., and was a guiding light to her family and community. Growing up in Greenwood alongside her siblings—Willie Henry, Thomas, Arthur, Ula Mae, and Hattie Lee—Frances learned the values of family and community early on. Her educational journey in Greenwood County Schools was cut short as she took on responsibilities to support her family, a testament to her enduring dedication and selflessness. Frances devoted much of her life to caring for others. She found her calling as a caregiver to the children of a prominent Greenwood family, nurturing and guiding three boys with compassion and care. Her professional life, while humble, was marked by profound influence and love that extended beyond her immediate family. A lifelong member of Second Damascus Baptist Church, Frances was deeply committed to her faith. She sang joyfully in both the Gospel Choir and Senior Choir, her voice a testament to her devotion. Her Sundays at church were among her most treasured times, offering her both solace and joy. Frances's life was enriched by her love for her family and her community. She cherished visiting neighbors and spending time with loved ones, particularly during the much-anticipated Chappell Family Reunions along the East Coast. Her laughter and quick wit were always a source of delight, and her warm smile could light up a room. In her later years, Frances found joy in her favorite television shows, including "The Young and the Restless," "Fred Sanford," and "Judge Judy." Her nephew, Barry Chappell, and his fiancée, Mae, lovingly cared for her in her final years, ensuring she was surrounded by family and love. Frances is survived by her devoted brother, Timothy Chappell, Jr., and his wife Dorothy, who remained by her side, offering unwavering support. She also leaves behind a special niece, Tonya Chappell, known affectionately as "Tongee," who shared many cherished moments with Frances. A celebration of Frances Chappell's life will be held on August 29, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Second Damascus Baptist Church, located at 506 Gaines Store Rd., Greenwood, SC 29648.
