Felicia Ann Sharkey
January 25, 1937 — July 1, 2026
Felicia Ann Sharkey, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, nurse, and friend, passed away peacefully at her son's home in San Antonio Texas on July 1, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was 89 years old.
Born on January 25, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, to Carlyle and Cecelia Hoover, Felicia grew up with a strong sense of family and community, values she carried throughout her life. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Thomas Sharkey, her parents, her brother Philip Hoover, and her granddaughter Rachel.
Felicia's journey of love and commitment began when she met and married Thomas Sharkey on June 4, 1960, in Detroit. Together, they created a life rich in love, laughter, and adventure. For 48 cherished years, Tom was the light of her life, until his passing in 2008. Felicia and Tom's partnership was a beautiful testament to their mutual support and unwavering encouragement, with Felicia often urging Tom to "follow his dreams," a mantra that led them on many shared adventures.
A graduate of nursing school in 1958, Felicia initially moved to Florida, where she began her lifelong career in nursing. Her passion for caring for others blossomed during her tenure as a labor and delivery nurse at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Melrose Park, Illinois. Her gentle touch and compassionate care left indelible marks on countless lives. Upon moving to California, she was a tele-nurse until retirement. She then devoted herself to volunteering at the Laguna Beach homeless shelter and a local hospice, embodying service and empathy.
Felicia's family was her greatest joy and accomplishment. She is survived by her seven children: Margaret Sharkey (Lew), Thomas Sharkey II (Wendy), Martin Sharkey (Maria), Mary Jane Cole (Jay), Maureen Fortenberry (Gene), Matthew Sharkey (Wendy), and Michael Sharkey (Kari). Her legacy continues through her 20 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy and pride to her life.
Her life was a tapestry of rich interests. Felicia was an avid reader and cherished her many book clubs. Her life in Laguna Woods was filled with vibrant Monday movie nights, and she delighted in watching her grandchildren excel on the golf course. Felicia, a devout catholic, attended mass daily and spoke often about her prayer list. Felicia's warmth and humor made her a cherished companion and confidante to many. Her biennial family reunions were legendary celebrations of love, unity, and the importance of family ties, funded by royalties from Tom's successful plays.
Felicia's spirit was characterized by her radiant smile, quick wit, and the extraordinary ability to make everyone feel welcomed and valued. Her kindness and generosity left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege to know her.
A private funeral service will be held to honor Felicia's life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice, reflecting Felicia's lifelong dedication to helping others.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Martin, Maria, and their family for their unwavering love and care over the past four years. Your selfless dedication allowed Felicia to spend her final years surrounded by love and comfort.
Felicia Ann Sharkey's legacy of love, compassion, and kindness will continue to resonate in the hearts of her family and all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
