In Loving Memory

Jose Miguel Otero
October 22, 1955 — April 27, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Jose Miguel Otero, who departed this world on April 27, 2026, at the age of 70. Born on October 22, 1955, in the vibrant city of Rio Piedras, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Father was the cherished son of the late Miguel A. Otero and Victoria Pizarro Otero.
Jose Miguel Otero was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Margaret Otano-Otero, with whom he shared a beautiful marriage and meaningful years that began in 1986 in the Bronx. Later in life, he found companionship and care with Milagros Ruiz, who remained a loving presence in his life until her passing in 2020. He was also predeceased by his siblings Brulinda, Maria, Carlito, Manuel, and Alfredo. His legacy of love and laughter endures through his surviving children: Jose Otero, Erica Otero, Jessica Otero, and Nanette Otero; his grandchildren Sky Sheppard, Alexander McCord, Janirise Morales, Jada Pineda, Riley Pineda and his three precious great-grandchildren Emaiz McCord, Solomon Sheppard, and Samori Sheppard. He is further survived by his siblings Elsie Otero and Lito Otero, (Shamaal Sheppard) and many beloved nephews, nieces, and their children.
Throughout his life, Miguel was a man of many talents and passions. He made his livelihood as a skilled car mechanic, a career that allowed him to channel his love for cars into a fulfilling profession. Yet, it was his love for salsa music and dancing that truly defined his spirit. Known for his infectious smile and quick wit, Miguel presence could light up any room, often accompanied by a well-timed joke or a heartfelt laugh.
Miguel hobbies were as colorful as his personality. He found joy in taking long walks, often with a Budweiser in hand and a Newport cigarette resting between his fingers. He was a man who knew how to enjoy life's simple pleasures, and his love for salsa music was matched only by his enthusiasm for sharing that passion with others.
His generosity knew no bounds, as evidenced by the joy he took in slipping dollar bills to his nieces and nephews every time he saw them—a small gesture that spoke volumes of his loving nature. Father's sarcasm and humor left a lasting impression on all who knew him, and his warm smile will be remembered by many.
A celebration of Jose Miguel Otero’s life will be held on May 30, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the Manhattan Funeral Service, located at 2242 First Ave, New York, NY, 10029. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at MFS, as well as to friends and loved ones, especially Sky Sheppard, Myra Otero, Destiny Negron, Thalia Ivelid and Chantilly Mariani for their unwavering support during this difficult time.
