January 17, 1943 — April 25, 2026
In the gentle embrace of family and friends, Fa’atausulu Penina Pasela Fio-Ta’a’efo, aged 83, left this earthly realm on April 25, 2026, at Scripps Hospital, Chula Vista, USA. Her journey began on January 17, 1943, in the lush beauty of Apia, American Samoa, a place that forever held her heart and shaped her enduring spirit.
Fa’atausulu was the cherished daughter of Leofi’a Fio and Savea ‘Aisakè Ta’a’efo, who preceded her in death, alongside her beloved siblings, Featanu Tuiali’i and ‘Aisake Savea Fio-Ta’a’efo. Her family, both immediate and extended, was always the cornerstone of her life, a testament to the deep love and unwavering dedication she held for those she cherished most.
In 1968, Fa’atausulu united her life with Fugaa Samoa in a marriage that flourished until his unforeseen disappearance in 2003. Together, they nurtured a family that grew to include their children: Leofi’a Martin, Savea Fio-Ta’a’efo, Marlin Fasiupea Letoa, Fa’afetai Asofà Fio-Ta’a’efo, Sela Finua Fio-Ta’a’efo, Furisè Ikatapuaga Fio-Ta’a’efo, Punou Ifakà, and Sesala Fio-Ta’a’efo. Her legacy extends through 34 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, each carrying forward the light that Fa’atausulu so brightly shone.
Her educational journey led her to Queen Liliuokalani High School and College for Girls, where she graduated in 1963, an achievement that laid the foundation for her career as the manager of Balboa Park. Over 47 years, she infused her work with passion and dedication, leaving an indelible mark before retiring to enjoy the fruits of her labor.
Beyond her professional life, Fa’atausulu was an active and devoted member of the First Samoan Baptist Church in Long Beach from the tender age of 29, nurturing her faith alongside her community. Her leadership extended into the cultural fabric of her heritage as a former leader of the Polynesian Elder Union since 2000, a role she embraced with pride and commitment.
Fa’atausulu was an avid food-lover, finding joy and connection in the sharing of meals, a reflection of her warm and generous spirit. Her culinary skills were as renowned as her kindness, often bringing people together in laughter and gratitude.
As we reflect on the remarkable tapestry of Fa’atausulu’s life, we remember her not only for her accomplishments and roles but for the love, strength, and resilience that defined her. Her departure leaves a profound void, yet her spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew her.
A celebration of her life will be held at the First Samoan Baptist Church in Long Beach, where family and friends will gather to honor her memory and the lasting legacy she leaves behind. May she rest in eternal peace, her spirit forever soaring above the island skies she so dearly loved.
