June 9, 1993 — May 24, 2026

In loving memory of Ezekiel Ellis Strayhorn, who peacefully transitioned from this life on May 24, 2026, at the age of 32. Born on June 9, 1993, in Wilson, North Carolina, Ezekiel was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend, whose presence illuminated the lives of all who knew him. Ezekiel, affectionately known as "Zek," was the cherished son of Jeremiah and Verona Strayhorn and the loving brother of the late Jerry Graham Strayhorn. His life was enriched by his second mom, Margie, and a large, loving family, including his brothers Kenneth, with wife Nikia, and Isaiah, with wife Kiara Rojas. He was the adored grandson of Ann Strayhorn, Ruby Davis, and Daniel Davis, and the treasured nephew of uncles Nehemiah, Micheal Sr., Elijah Jr., and Walter, and aunts Debrough, Dinah, Lila, Shirley, Renee, Wanda, Lisa, and Shelly Ways. Ezekiel's legacy continues through a host of nephews, nieces, cousins from the Strayhorn, Pollard, Bowens, Mincey, and Hicks families, and great-uncles George and Amos Lee, and great-aunts Barbara, Marion, Doris, and Shirley. On a sunlit summer day, Ezekiel married his soulmate, Jalissa Barmore, and together they crafted a beautiful life filled with love and laughter. Their bond was unshakeable, with Jalissa often calling him her "teddy bear." Their union was blessed with four wonderful children: three spirited sons, Ezra, Zy'on, and Baby Jerry, and a cherished daughter, Jazarah. Ezekiel adored his children and found great joy in their shared time, especially while engaging in fun-filled gaming sessions, where his sons always aimed to best him in Fortnite. A proud alumnus of JWJackson Academy, Mt. Hebron Adventist Academy, and Sallie B. Howard School, Ezekiel furthered his education through Penn Foster Online High School. His commitment to learning and personal growth was evident in every step of his journey. Professionally, Ezekiel dedicated his compassionate heart as a Behavioral Health Technician, where he touched countless lives with his kindness and understanding. Ezekiel was a devoted member of Mount Hebron SDA Church, where his passion for music shone brightly as he sang with the Praise Team. Alongside "mama" Buffy, Denise, Tonita, Cassandra, Aunt Lisa, cousin Alisha, Nita, Lashell, Mike Jr., and Toya, Ezekiel's voice was a beacon of hope and joy. His love for Japanese art and music was only rivaled by his innate ability to make everyone feel at ease with his big, warm smile and encouraging words. Ezekiel's generous spirit and unwavering faith were central to his character. He had a remarkable ability to connect with people, never meeting a stranger, and always encouraging others to "keep the faith and hold to God's unchanging hand." His concern for the well-being of others was a testament to his compassionate nature. Ezekiel's passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who loved him, including his best friends Chris Brown, Damian Archer, Ellen Marjorie Clark, Garin Freeman, and Joshua Hodges. His spirit will forever be cherished by his friends and church families in Wilson, Whiteville, and the Metro area, as well as his JWJ and Carolina Adventist Academy friends and staff. A celebration of Ezekiel's life will be held on June 7, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Charles H. Darden Middle School, located at 1665 Lipcomb Rd., Wilson, NC 27896. The Strayhorn family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who offered support, through prayers, flowers, and acts of kindness, during this time of great sorrow. Special thanks to those who went above and beyond; your love and generosity have been a great source of comfort. Ezekiel Ellis Strayhorn's legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire all who knew him. Though he has left this earthly realm, his spirit remains a guiding light, reminding us all to cherish each moment and to love deeply.
