Eugene Sowell

October 26, 1931 — May 24, 2026

It is with profound sadness, yet a deep appreciation for a life well-lived, that we announce the passing of Eugene Sowell, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Eugene peacefully departed this world on May 24, 2026, at the age of 94, in the comforting presence of his loved ones. Born on October 26, 1931, in the rolling hills of Trigg County, Kentucky, Eugene was the beloved son of Alpha and Elise (Johnson) Sowell. He was nurtured in a home filled with love and values that would guide him throughout his distinguished life. Predeceased by his devoted wife, Wanda (Robertson) Sowell, whom he married on December 29, 1961, Eugene and Wanda shared nearly 63 wonderful years of marriage until her passing on September 15, 2024. Eugene is survived by his son, Jason Sowell, who continues to carry forward his father's legacy of integrity and dedication. He was a proud grandfather to Jesse Sowell, Heather Haney, and Lara Walker, who will forever cherish his stories and the wisdom he imparted. His six great-grandchildren will grow up with tales of a great-grandfather whose warmth and humor left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His surviving family also includes his brother, Wilton Sowell, and his sisters, Wilmuth Hendricks, Nadine Mize, Nancy Simpson, and Martha Nell Menser. Eugene was predeceased by his parents, his wife Wanda, his son Michael Eugene Sowell, daughter-in-law Denise Sowell, brother A.C. Sowell, and sisters Barbara Perry, Norma Wadlington, and Lois Stewart. Eugene proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956, a testament to his enduring sense of duty and honor. After his service, Eugene returned to his roots, dedicating his life to farming the family land in Cerulean. He was a man of many hats, owning and operating a grocery store and a feed mill, and he was known for hauling lime across the county with a friendly smile and a helping hand. A lifelong member of the Wallonia Christian Church, Eugene found solace and strength in his faith, and he shared that faith with his community, serving as an example of kindness and generosity. His steadfast presence and gentle spirit will be deeply missed in the congregation and beyond. Eugene's life was a tapestry of hard work, devotion, and love. He possessed a quiet strength and a heart full of compassion, touching countless lives with his humility and grace. As we say goodbye to Eugene, we remember a man who was truly the embodiment of a life well-lived, and we find comfort in knowing he has been reunited with his beloved Wanda and all those who went before him. The family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate Eugene's life at a service to be held at Wallonia Christian Church, where his spirit will undoubtedly be felt. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of your choice in Eugene's memory, carrying forward his legacy of helping others. Eugene Sowell's life was a testament to the power of love, hard work, and faith. May we all strive to honor his memory by living with the same integrity and kindness he showed us every day.
