It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Eugene Jeff Borner, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend, who departed this world on April 19, 2026. Eugene's life journey, which began in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, enriched the lives of everyone fortunate to know him.
Born to Willie Lee Borner Sr. and Della Mae Lois Borner on February 6, 1962, Eugene was a beacon of warmth and wisdom from an early age. He was a cherished son who grew up surrounded by the bustling streets of Chicago, attending Mainer and Schiller Elementary, Cooley High, and Near North Career Magnet High School. His education laid the foundation for a life dedicated to hard work, family, and faith.
Eugene's career spanned over three decades as a dedicated janitor in downtown Chicago. His commitment to his work was unwavering, and he took pride in every task, big or small. Known for his warm smile and willingness to lend a helping hand, Eugene became a respected and loved figure among his colleagues and friends.
Family was the cornerstone of Eugene's life. He shared a deep and abiding love with his wife, Charlene Borner, and was a devoted father to his daughters, Ryan Logan and Gina Borner, and his son, Cornelius Ton Ton Bates. Eugene also cherished his goddaughter, Kearra Thomas (Stephan), and found immense joy in his role as a grandfather to Marcus, Domonique, Nautica, Cyan, Trishel, and Jaliyah. His mother, Della Mae Lois Borner, survives him, as do his siblings Frank Borner, David Borner, Tyrone Borner (Loraine), Danny Borner (April), Lois Button Kirkendall, Shirley Borner (Frank), and Victoria Borner. Eugene's extended family included numerous nieces, nephews, an aunt, two uncles, and a host of bonus families and friends, all of whom he held dear.
Eugene's love for his community shone brightly through his active participation in several church families, including Resurrected Life, Evangelistic Outreach Deliverance Ministries, New Hope Baptist, Kingdom Culture, and Rise International Ministries. His dedication to serving others was evident in his roles as an usher and parking lot attendant, always greeting everyone with kindness and a ready smile.
In his leisure time, Eugene found joy in simple pleasures. He loved bowling, drawing, and building Legos with his nephews. Wrestling, watching movies, and constructing model cars were among his favorite pastimes. Eugene possessed a natural gift for handyman and mechanic tasks, always ready to fix, build, or create something new.
Eugene was preceded in death by his father, Willie Lee Borner Sr., his son, Steven Lashon Bates, his brothers, Willie Lee Borner Jr., Nathaniel Borner, and Mark Borner, and his sister, Yolanda Borner. Though their absence leaves a void, their memories live on in the hearts of those who continue to celebrate Eugene's life and legacy.
A service to honor and remember Eugene Jeff Borner will be held on April 19, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Power House International Ministries, located at 8908 S Ashland, Chicago, IL. The family extends their deepest gratitude to all who have offered support, love, and respect during this difficult time. They wish to express a heartfelt thank you to each and every person and family for their kindness and compassion.
