Eugene Dougherty
August 1, 1953 - April 15, 2026
With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Eugene Dougherty on April 15, 2026, at the age of 72. Gene completed his life journey surrounded by those he loved most, his spirit remaining unyielded by the 14-year journey with Parkinson's Disease he bravely endured. Throughout, he embodied his cherished motto, 'mind over matter,' as his body faced its challenges with grace and resilience.
Born on August 1, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, Gene was the beloved son of Eugene and Margaret Dougherty, who preceded him in death. His life was a testament to the values they instilled in him: love, faith, and service. Gene is now reunited in eternal peace with his parents, his in-laws Joseph and Janis Filippone, and his siblings-in-law Barbara Vanderleest and Peter Hansen.
Gene's life was beautifully intertwined with that of his devoted and loving wife of 35 years, Cindy. Their love story began in the board room of St. Mary's Hospital, where their paths first crossed. On May 27, 1990, they pledged their lives to one another, embarking on a journey filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Joseph and Margaret, and welcomed a son-in-law, Evan Lange, into their family. Gene's heart overflowed with love for his granddaughters, Eleanor and Molly, who brought him immeasurable joy.
Education was a cornerstone of Gene's life. A proud native of Chicago, he attended grade school at St. James and later became a 'Lion for Life' at St. Viator High School. His commitment to St. Viator was unwavering; he returned to impart his wisdom as a social studies teacher, coach the Feeder program, serve on the Board of Trustees, and organize alumni gatherings, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.
Gene's pursuit of knowledge led him to Northern Illinois University, where he joined the Delta Upsilon fraternity and forged lifelong friendships. His leadership as chapter president was recognized and celebrated. He furthered his education at Loyola University Law School, graduating in 1986, where he made connections that truly lasted a lifetime.
In his professional life, Gene sought joy and the opportunity to serve others. From managing the Stone Cottage Pub to his time in the Cardiac Cath Lab, and through his roles at the Attorney General's Office, MMI, and as VP of Sales at AJ Gallagher, Gene approached each role with passion and dedication.
Beyond his career, Gene was a pillar in his community. He was actively involved with the Worship and Spiritual Life Commission at OLW, the Christian Family Movement, and the St. Viator Board of Trustees. His love for coaching was evident as he enthusiastically led teams in 5th grade girls park district softball and 8th grade boys St. Viator Feeder basketball, often motivating his players with the promise of frozen pizzas.
Gene's spirituality and faith were guiding forces in his life, reflected in his actions and words. He delighted in late-night discussions about the Course in Miracles and lived his faith through service, always seeing the good in others. His profound ability to communicate his thoughts was a gift, as he once wrote, "We all have the power to save the world. Not in the false sense of power, but in the power that comes from knowing who you really are in relationship with God and with everyone else that comes into your life."
Gene is survived by his cherished wife, Cindy; his children, Joseph and Margaret (Evan) Lange; his adored granddaughters, Eleanor and Molly; his siblings, Joanne (John) Fox, Kathy Hopkins, Mary Darmofal, James (Deborah) Dougherty, and Timothy (Rebecca) Dougherty; his sisters-in-law, Nancy Hansen, Jennie Filippone, Mary (Bill) Henderson; brother-in-law, David (Tricia) Filippone; and numerous nieces, nephews, his beloved DU brothers, and the extended St. Viator Family.
In honoring Gene’s legacy, donations may be made to St. Viator High School or the Parkinson's Foundation. Contributions can be made online at Parkinson's Foundation Donations.
Gene's life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and community. His legacy will endure through the countless lives he touched with his kindness, wisdom, and unyielding spirit. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
