Ethelyn R. Johnson
January 13, 1948 — June 28, 2026
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Ethelyn R. Johnson, a remarkable woman whose vibrant spirit touched countless lives. Ethelyn was born on January 13, 1948, in Washington, DC, and peacefully departed this world on June 28, 2026, at Inova Specialty Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia.
Ethelyn was the beloved daughter of the late Hildret S. Crawford and Macie L. Crawford. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Frank Johnson, whom she married on June 23, 1969, and with whom she shared a beautiful, albeit brief, life until his untimely passing in 1971. Ethelyn was also preceded in death by her cherished siblings, Alan (Bumpy) Crawford and Letitia (Tish) Crawford, as well as her beloved daughter, Luraine Johnson.
A proud graduate of Cardozo Senior High School, Ethelyn went on to dedicate many years of service to the federal government, working at the U.S. Postal Service. She later found a fulfilling career at The Hair Cuttery, where she spent over two decades delighting clients and colleagues alike with her warmth and skill.
Ethelyn was a woman of many passions. An avid reader, she was rarely seen without a book—or three—in hand. Her love for the Harry Potter series was well-known among family and friends. She embraced life with gusto, reveling in travel, music, and the simple joy of a sunny day. Her quick wit and ability to "talk stuff" endeared her to many, and her spirited personality ensured she lived life without letting the grass grow under her feet.
Ethelyn is lovingly remembered by her surviving children: Michelle (Albert) Hardy, Charmelle Johnson, and Gregory Flournoy. She leaves behind treasured memories with her grandchildren, Nicholas Hardy, Shaunay Johnson, and Desiree' Hardy, and her great-granddaughter, Mariah Johnson. Her extended family and dear friends will forever cherish her memory.
A celebration of Ethelyn's life will take place on July 18, 2026, at 9:30 AM at First Bethel Baptist Church, located at 1 Kettering Drive, Upper Marlboro, MD. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who prayed for, supported, and loved Ethelyn. A special acknowledgment goes to Mr. Quinton Gatlin, whose unwavering support and love for Ethelyn will always be remembered. The family is profoundly grateful to you, Quinton, and you will always hold a place in their hearts as family.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Ethelyn's memory to a charity of your choice.
Ethelyn R. Johnson's legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know her. Her life was a testament to love, resilience, and the joy of living fully. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
