Ethel Gardner

Ethel Gardner, a beloved matriarch and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on May 10, 1934, in Mobile, Alabama, Ethel was the daughter of the late Sarah and Timothy Boyd. Her life's journey was marked by grace, laughter, and an unwavering dedication to those she loved. Ethel spent 55 wonderful years married to her late husband, Thomas Gardner. Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and the delightful chaos of their four children: the late Ethel Thomas Gardner Jr., Kimberly Gardner, Samantha Gardner Smith, and Roderick Gardner. Her legacy continues through her 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her life. A dedicated educator, Ethel found her calling in teaching and spent 30 years shaping young minds as a third-grade teacher. Her passion for education was evident in her nurturing approach, and she took great pride in watching her students grow and succeed. After retiring from teaching, Ethel continued to serve her community by working at the local post office for 15 years. Ethel was an active and devoted member of Cottage Hill Baptist Church, where her voice was a joyful addition to the choir. Her faith and fellowship were central to her life, and she found immense happiness in the company of her church family. Known for her quick wit and warm smile, Ethel had a unique gift for making everyone feel welcome. Her home was a gathering place where the aroma of her delicious cooking drew neighbors and friends alike. Her generosity and humor created a sense of community that will be dearly missed. Ethel was predeceased by her son, Ethel Thomas Gardner Jr., and her husband, Thomas Gardner. She is survived by her daughters, Kimberly Gardner and Samantha Gardner Smith, her son, Roderick Gardner, and a large, loving extended family. A service to celebrate Ethel's life will be held at 11:00 AM on August 27, 2026, at Cottage Hill Baptist Church, located at 4255 Cottage Hill Rd, Mobile, Alabama 36609. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the members of Cottage Hill Baptist Church, the friends and members of Chastang Middle School, and the management of the post office for their support and kindness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ethel's memory to a charity of your choice. Her light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew her.
